Is valerian an effective sleep aid?!

Question: I've been having a terrible time both falling and staying asleep. I've been reading about valerian and it seems like a more natural sleep aid.

Answers: I've been having a terrible time both falling and staying asleep. I've been reading about valerian and it seems like a more natural sleep aid.

Valerian root works quite well for relaxing effects, but for me it didn't help much with staying asleep. I found that some of the teas that can be purchased in health food stores work better... some have other herbs in the tea as well as added Valerian for the extra boost.

Melatonin is also good.. but can't be used for long term. Melatonin is a 5-methoxy-N-acetyltryptamine, and a naturally occurring hormone found in most animals and some of other living organisms, including algae and humans, at levels that vary in a daily cycle. It plays a role in the regulation of the circadian rhythm of several biological functions. Perhaps just using this for awhile would benefit you in getting back a regular sleep habit.

Yes, Valerian is very effective for many people.... but unfortunately, different people respond differently to different supplements, so you may not get as much of a benefit for sleep as some other people. Give it a try and see how it works for you.
If it doesn't work well enough, there are also several other natural options to help with sleep. There's Melatonin, Chamomile, Hops, L-Tryptophan, L-Theanine, Passionflower, and Scullcap (an herb).
You can try any one of those (one at a time, though) to help you sleep naturally.

Valerian is a good choice, you can check flower essence, you can also check complex B. (But a good one). Normally when you having difficulty to sleep you have some anxiety you have to check what you going to do with your stress. My suggestion will be exercise, meditation or breathing exercise, proper diet, drink pleanty water, use a good supplement.
And go to sleep.
Good luck to you.

Hi,
Valerian is potent, natural, non-addictive and with no side effects. For best results you might want to take it around 2 hours before sleep. For some people it takes upto 3-4 hours, so you might want to experiment with the time.

Mint tea, chicory-based alkaline drinks (you can find them in health food stores) and chamomile tea are equally potent.

Hope this helps.

Magnesium, preferably in the form og chloride so that it is easily absorbed and works immediately, is an excellent muscle and nerve relaxant.

It is the magnesium in chamomille and other herbs which gives them their properties as "sleeping aids".

In addition to being very effective Magnesium Chloride is very cheap - 1 Euro for 20 gr. which dissolve in 1 liter of water and lasts about one week.

Wishing you a good sleep!

Valerian, is okay. I'm sure it works diffrently for diffrent people. For me, it helped a little but more so, it just relaxed me. However, Melatonin, works wonders, i read about it in a magazine, then heard about it on tv, so i picked some up, and not only does it work fast, but it lasts the whole night. I know other people who have used it to, it works so good.
