Why are doctors nasty about some natural cures? ?!

Question: Why are doctors nasty about some natural cures!? !?
Many medicines come from ancient natural cures such as deadly night shade and aspirin from tree bark, so why are some doctors so nasty about natural cures!? We wouldn't have medicine if it wasn't for the early herbalists!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

First of all in the UK it would be advantageous for GPs to prescribe or recommend alternative therapies, IF THEY WORKED! As these preparations are cheap for the NHS or indeed free if the patient buys them, it thus reduces the GP's prescribing costs, something the powers that be are always trying to get them to do!.

Of course the flat earth brigade, who just ignore the mass of scientific data available to demonstrate the failure of most of these therapies, just ignore this information!. They basically run on ' I want it to work, ' so it doesn't matter that it is proven to be useless, 'I still think it works!.'

Acupuncture is the easiest to debunk as one large study managed this on its own!. It compared patients receiving 'proper' acupuncture with a similar control group receiving random needle pricks!. Both groups showed identical results, demonstrating the effect was purely a placebo one!.

There have been a significant number of studies looking at comparing homeopathic preparations with placebo, none showed advantage, but I accept the logistics behind doing double blind cross over studies on each and every homeopathic preparation at all possible strengths is impossible!.

Herbal remedies are often pharmacologically active and are certainly sometimes useful!. A big concern here is a lack of safety data, especially for preparations used long term!.

Again there is some evidence that certain aromatherapy oils are useful!. There has been a study which very successfully weaned patients off temazepam, using lavender oil, which was in my view quite impressive!.

Doctors themselves often use drugs on patients which they believe are useful, despite much evidence that they are often worthless!. There are countless examples of this!. The largest group by volume is antibiotics, where it is estimated that as many as 85% of all prescriptions for all indications are not only unnecessary but statistically more harmful than doing nothing!. The just published NICE Guideline 69, shows clearly that they should not routinely be used in colds, coughs, sore throats, middle ear infections and sinus infections!.

So not only am I open minded, but as a consconscientious doctor I took very seriously my duty to provide the best care for patients, based on the best information available, no matter what the origin of the therapy!. To this end our practice employed its own aromatherapist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Ever heard the word "quack" - someone who pretends to cure diseases miraculously by means which orthodox doctors scorn !?
This is WHY the orthodox doctors scorn the so-called "natural" cures!.
There are many diseases which get better of their own accord, so taking herbal ( etc) medicines might appear to work, and when a "natural" treatment seems to have caused the cure, quacks will claim all sort of things for their products, which, if you are lucky, will have been no worse than useless!.
There are problems with dosages of herbal and unorthodox treatments!. You probably have no idea what strength of a compound is in the stuff you are taking, so you don't know if the dose is just above useless or just below harmful!. In fact, plants with so-called curative properties may have different amounts of the desired compound in their leaves, flowers, stalks, seeds and roots, depending on whether it has been a good or a bad season, sunny or wet!.
Most early herbalists will have killed a number of their patients by not getting the doses right, especially in the case of deadly nightshade!. They simply weren't scientific enough to understand the biochemistry of the plant compounds!.
And if aspirin were to be put up today for modern pharmaceutical testing, as required by governments for health , safety and efficacy reasons, it would fail!. Aspirin can cause stomach bleeding, for instance!.
Go on, name me one "natural" treatment which has received full, rigorous testing for safety, efficacy and dosage-strengths in the last twenty years!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Not all doctors are anti-natural medicine, it all depends on what doctor you go to!. If you're interested in exploring natural cures I would visit a Homeopathic doctor!. Many main-stream doctors are against natural remedies because they see them as placebos and homeopathic doctors prefer avoiding traditional medicines and vaccinations!.

My personal experience with a Homeopathic doctor was good (and interesting) because I was given both acupuncture and acupressure!. She also had me taking natural pills (such as prim rose hips) and eating a more organic diet!. I would highly recommend visiting one, but not as your main medical adviser(especially because most insurance wont cover homeopathic doctors)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Most do not believe they work, I personally do and use lots of natural medicines and aromatherapy oils for my moods!. There are some out there though that over long periods of time can actually harm you and for people who do not know a great deal about them can cause serious permanent harm to themselves, I think this is also an issue that doctors have to face and a reason for them not wanting people to go out and try to treat there own illnesses and ailments!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Not all natural 'cures' are beneficial and some therapies practised by altmed therapists are a complete waste of time and money so Drs!. are being very skeptical about them!.
However they do take their skepticism too far to the point where you have to question if that is what it is or they are just trying to protect their interests!.
They behave like they have exclusive rights to healthcare provision!. The public almost seems unimportant and too many take the attitude that Jo Public is too stupid an ill informed to make decent choices and needs to be protected from itself!.
They also ignore that fact that many people use alt-med after going through the conventional system first and have it fail them!.

Doctors are a self interest group!. Not all are anti alternative medicine though!. My mate is a chiropractor and he works out of a GP's surgery!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

To be Fair, they dismiss many pharma medicines too, they have to keep a critical eye as best they see fit!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

cause they have stock in the drug companies and they dont want to be put out of business!. Drugs just mask the problem, herbal remedies work on the problem deep down!.
