Answers:
Benzos are one of my specialties!. So here we go!.

Xanax is one of the most potent (if not the most potent) benzodiazepine tranquilizer!. It is slightly selective for anxiolytic (anxiety relief) activity over sedation!. Single dose lasts about six to seven hours!. Early on in treatment (first several weeks) it tends to be very sedating to the person taking it!. The sedative effect disappears within about three to four weeks, on average!. Tolerance to the anxiolytic effect does not develop, though many people believe it does, confusing the sedation with the relief from anxiety!.

Dependence also forms rapidly, within weeks of using!. To stop taking this drug, it must be reduced slowly, with a physician's care!. Stopping it cold turkey can lead to seizures (due to benzos also having anti-seizure activity)!. Actual addiction and abuse of benzos is extremely rare in people who are not pre-existing drug addicts or have other substance abuse problems!. Benzos should never be given to someone who has abused other drugs unless absolutely necessary!. If you have a family history of substance abuse, they should be avoided due to the risk of developing addiction!.

For social anxiety disorder, this wouldn't be my first choice to be honest!. Social anxiety disorder responds better to SSRI treatment (Celexa is a good choice) than other anxiety disorders, however, benzos do work well!. Xanax would not be my first choice benzo!. Valium, due to its long half life and slightly lower potency would be a better starting point!. Valium is also easier to get off of if you need to stop using the medication!.

The action of benzos is in several areas of the brain - they sedate you, they reduce anxiety, they inhibit the formation of new memory while you are under the dose of the benzo, they have anti-seizure activity and mild muscle relaxing potency, for some people they produce a slightly euphoric feeling!. Tolerance to the sedation and euphoria develop very rapidly, under four weeks!.

Contrary to popular belief, these drugs are quite safe to use in the long term for treating anxiety disorders!. They earned a very bad reputation in the 70s due to a moral panic - they're really quite safe!. Killing yourself with a benzo is quite hard unless you start mixing in alcohol and opiates!.

Xanax is a Schedule IV controlled substance!. Having it without a prescription is a felony!. Basically your doctor has to prescribe it for you!. If you're treating an anxiety disorder, it should be a psychiatrist!. This probably isn't the first line drug for social anxiety in any psychiatrist's handbook!.

If you've got further questions, please feel free to private message me!. I spent my first year as a grad student working more or less exclusively on benzo research!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Consider Bu-Spar also!. I took it for a time for general anxiety problems!. Not habit-forming, but it can have some bothersome side effect!. If they bother you, you can discontinue and try something else!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
