If anti-depressants help people, why have suicides dramatically gone up in the l!

Question: If anti-depressants help people, why have suicides dramatically gone up in the last 20 years!?
Don't get me wrong, I've seen people dramatically helped by these medicines, including in my direct family!.
But you would expect to see a significant drop in suicides which are almost always caused by severe clinical depression!.
Maybe it's once again that people believe that health (and happiness) are to be found in a bottle of pills!?

Thats a good question!.
While Antidepresants can be life saving there is no doubt that they are over prescribed!.
Even where indicated, anti-depressants alone are probably not enough!.
Being multifactorial in thinking, life style choices are also very helpful in helping lift depression also so is the individual themselves!.
I have noticed depression seems to have very little to do with circumstances!. People who have the most difficult trials in life seem to just get on with it and be as happy as larry when they have a positive mental attitude!.
Other people who appear to have everything are desperately unhappy and want to kill themselves!. Is the way of thinking a big factor here!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Because people take anti-depressants when they don't need them, and they can get prescriptions very easy as it keeps the pharmaceutical companies rollin' in the doe!. Some people really need medication because of real mental instability; others are just looking for an easy way out, and buy in to the lie of modern medicine instead of buckin' it up!. And when you take anti-depressants when you don't need them, that's very bad!. It's like a normal healthy person doing chemotherapy for a toothache!. Everybody gets depressed, people should learn to deal with it!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Unfortunately, there will always be people out there that won't get help or can't see that they even have a problem until it's too late!. Additionally, some people have no one on their side!. When a person is that depressed, it's difficult to find the ability to "climb out" of the darkness to even get the help they need without close friends and family on their side!. It's sad, but it happens a lot!. I've been depressed!. It's not just emotionally draining, but physically as well!. So, I don't think it's whether the pills work or not, but more that the pills aren't reaching everyone that needs them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Actually, there has been shown to be a correlation between taking anti-depressants and suicide!. It is not clear whether they are part of the solution or the problem!.

There is way too much emphasis on taking drugs in this country nowadays!. People take drugs with the potential for serious long-term side-effects when they have a minor condition that everybody put up with before, or something that would otherwise be remedied by a lifestyle change!. Allergic to your pets!? Don't give them away, take this drug, although it will damage your heart!. (I know the person who this happened to!.)

That's what happens when you let the pharmaceutical industry shape your health care policy!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You seem to be making the assumption that those who commit suicide have done so after seeking treatment for depression and being prescribed anti-depressants!. The article makes no such claim - it doesn't even mention anti-depressants!. Far too many people who suffer from severe depression do not seek the help that might make them better!. I know from my volunteer work on an emergency suicide helpline that some of these people are suspicious of conventional medicine - a suspicion that is encouraged by the promoters of quack therapies!.

Anti-depressants saved my life and I urge anyone suffering from severe and prolonged depression to seek help from a qualified medical practitioner!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You are right that there are more people on antidepressants, and yet more suicides, than there were a generation ago!. The types of antidepressants that people take these days get approved because they are able to pass two clinical trials showing that the have a statistically significant ability to improve the symptoms of depression!. and so they do!.

However, there is a growing body of evidence that they make people more likely to kill themselves in some, if not all, cases!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Just out of curiosity, does your direct family still take the meds!?
I'm asking because everyone I know who has gotten off of anti-depressants dramatically get worse, even worse than they were at the beginning!. I don't know anyone who has taken anti-depressants, improved, stopped taking them, and is still doing good!.
That doesn't sound like a very successful therapy to me, if you are dependent on a substance for happiness and a lack thereof leads you to depression and suicide!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Actually I think it's because people refuse to take anti depressants!.

I used to know a ton of people who would whine and cry about being depressed and about how life sucked, and refused to talk to anyone or take pills!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would expect that there have probably been similar numbers of attempted suicides over the last 20 years, however accessibility to lethal substances has become easier!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
