What herbal medication can I take?!

Question: What herbal medication can I take!?
Ever since I had a knee replacement by epidural I have suffered from what I can only call painless spasms!. My doctor admits that he has never come across this before and I am currently waiting test results from the hospital!. The spasms occur in my virgina area!. These have prevented me sleeping, eg!. I have only had 5 hours sleep over the past 3 nights, as these spasms occur when I lay down, but on rare occasion when I am sitting in my chair!.
What I would like is a herbal remedy that will put me in such a deep sleep that they will not wake me (the spasms I mean) I do not want sleeping tablets from the dr, as I know they can become addictive!.
I do have painkillers Co-Codamol 8/300 not that they do much for me!. I am at my wits end with pain, caused by arthritis, small jobs seem to take so long, but I am determined not to let it rule my life, but without sleep, I feel as if I'm losing the battle!.

I'm afraid alternative 'remedies' will only have a limited therapeutic efficieny in this instance!. If you're in pain, the best advise is to take paracetamol!. You could also try an NSAID like Ibuprofen (if no GI inssue!.) You'll have to wait till you get the results of the scan to find out what the underlying cause could be!.

Co-Codamol is a poor choice of pain management!. The addictiveness of this drug is also hugely under estimated by some health care providers!. It will also cause constipation!.

Edit
To below, No need to make this personal!. I did not say it is of no benefit, I said 'limited benefit' for pain relief simply because there is very limited scientific evidence that supports it's use as being very efficient!. You didn't read my answer properly!. Herbal remedies are being used more in the NHS nowadays!. There is however, only limited studies that have shown it to be of any benefit!.

I don't doubt that herbs contain chemical compounds!. Up to 25% of modern medicines are based on plant origins!.

The problem with taking aids for sleep (conventional or natural) is that you can become dependant upon it very quickly and one is then unable to sleep without it!. It would be better to tackle the route cause of why one isn't sleeping!. In your case it's pain, the NSAID will also reduce any inflammation!.

Finally, Herbal medicine has been around for many years and still remains a pseudoscientific approach to therapy!. There is little scientific evidence to support the claims of its efficiency!. Herbal remedies do contain beneficial compounds!.!.but to be honest it is through a scientific approach that these benefits are mainly effective!.

Herbal remedies do contain active ingredients!. This is why some of it can be shown to have a physiological effect; it is also why the potential dangers from them are higher than with other so called alternative 'remedies!.'

The problem is, many people think that because herbal remedies are natural, they are harmless; this isn't he case!. It must always be remembered that there are potential dangers from using home made remedies or those prescribed by unqualified charlatans!. The main problem is that are that there is hardly any regulation for this highly profitable industry!.

I don't think the alternative therapy brigade have given me ENOUGH thumbs down! I now consider TD a compliment, it means you have read my answer and thought about it!Www@Answer-Health@Com

You might try Melatonin!. That will help you to sleep!. Not sure if that will help your spasms!. Ibuprofen might do that for you as it helps things to relax!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

INDIA Try a homeo medicine 1] mag phos 6x one dose every 5th day{ one dose is 4 pills [ chew] half an hour after any meals - lunch or dinner ]Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't know any herbal!. But tylenol works for most pain!.!.!.!.!.!.!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't think that there is any medicine for this suffering!. I am an old aged person and suffered from similar symptoms starting at the age of 30 !. Only pain killers help to certain extent!. Sometime homeopathic medicines also work for few days!. Day before yesterday I could not sleep till 6 AM due to this kind of spams!. But the only plus point in my case is that I sleep in the morning hours for 3-4 hrs that make me normal!.
Some vitamins to give strength to nerves also help which can be taken as per Doctor's advice!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Valerian is a strong herbal tranquilizer that will help you to sleep!. You should not take it over a long period, but you can take it for a week or two just to get some sleep!. You can either drink it in tea or take it in capsules!. Some people prefer capsules because it is a bit smelly -- smells like strong cheese!.

As to the supposed "RN" who claims that herbs don't do anything, she can't be an RN or trained in any sort of medicine, as she would certainly know better if she were!. Herbs are chemically effective just as pharmaceuticals are and must be used with care!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

sorry to tell you this but I doubt any herbal med!. will knock you out that strongly to numb out the pain!. If you still would like to try a herbal one, apparently the homeopathic remedy called Lycopodium is the one most frequently prescribed for insomnia!.
The other thing is can your dr give you sleeping tablets for now until the pain subsides or your test results come!? that way they won't be addictive!?
for arthritic pain, I found this on a website I consult for advice on alternative & herbal remedies:
'!.!.!.!.Arthritis/Rheumatism
One of the best anti-inflammatory painkillers for the joints and for sports injuries is an substance called bromelain, which is actually an enzyme from fresh pineapple juice!. Bromelain reduces inflammation by first breaking down fibrin, a substance that would otherwise work in the body to cause local swelling!. It has also been shown to be as effective as antibiotics in treating a variety of infectious and painful conditions, from bronchitis to pneumonia!.'
