Does St Johns Wort actually work for anxiety and depression?!

Question: Does St Johns Wort actually work for anxiety and depression!?
I used to take Paxil two years ago but stopped it within about 8 months of use despite being told it was a good idea to continue by the psychiatrist!.

But I went to see my GP a few days ago with another problem!. I ended up telling him my issue with Paxil and he said I can try St Johns Wort if I would like to try anything herbal!.!.!. I thought it was a bit strange for a doctor to suggest anything herbal but just want to know if it really works!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
St!. John's Wort has some mild anti-depressant effects!. Mild being the key word here!. It was only somewhat effective in MILD cases of depression!.

The GP probably mentioned this since you were complaining about Paxil, which as far as anti-dpressants go, is pretty mild in the 'emotionally numbing' effect!. I'm on Paxil as well and this emotional numbness is disconcerting sometimes, but there isn't really an alternative that works as well as it does for me!. I've tried Zoloft (same effect, but stopped working after several years), and a few others (Wellbutrin and Effextor kept me from sleeping, probably because of the norepinephrine reuptake inhibition!.!.!. or so I guess)!. St!. John's Wort will probably do the same thing, but the problem is that the active ingredient in any of the products is not a controlled dosage!. So when you take two pills of this stuff one day and two pills the next, you may get different dosages!. Or even different dosages between Lot #s!. They don't have to QC herbal supplements in regards to purity!. That's why I'd avoid it!.

I guess what you have to decide is between the depression and the emotional numbness!. Personally I found the latter far more tolerable than the suicidal thoughts, physical pain, fatigue and despair caused by depression!.

There are other drugs that might 'like you' better than paxil!. You might respond to Wellbutrin or Effexor far better than Paxil!. They work a little differently!.

Best wishes in dealing with your depression!. I know what you're going through!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

St Johns Wort has been shown by proper scientific clinical trials to help some people with mild depression!. That sets it apart from the unproven remedies!. It interferes with the uptake of some other prescribed medications (for other conditions) so it is wise to only take it on medical recommendation, as you will!.

Good luck!. Hope you are feeling yourself again soon!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Herbal remedies work differently for everyone!.

I tried it and it did nothing for me!. My doctor had me use a natural calcuim!. Calcuim works like a sleeping pill so you can rest!. It actually helps your brain shut down so you can sleep!.

I get my calcuim from www!.marketamerica!.com!. It is the only liquid calcium I found on the market!. It is made with three types of calcuim and about 95% is absorbed into your body in ten minutes!. This product is very inexpensive about $20!.00 for a three months supply!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Just because something is a natural remedy, doesn't make it harmless!. St John's Wort is a very powerful herb and should be taken under medical supervision!. I'm surprised your GP was so flippant about suggesting it!. Get a second opinion!. Don't go off your medication without supervision and you shouldn't take the two together!.

I know people for whom it works very well but they are monitored by their GPs!. Good luck and God bless!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's been used medicinally for hundreds of years!. The leaves contain a mixture of chemicals, some of which have a tranquillising effect!. Give it a try - it'll save the NHS a few bob!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I've started taking it, and my mum absolutly swears by it, as do the majority of her friends,

- give it a go, if after a few weeks you feel no different, stop!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, it didn't work for me, infact it made me feel worse!. I'm on lexapro now after being on paxil for 7 years and i feel great!. lexapro is used for both depression and anxiety :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Apparently it works for mild depression!. Dr Bartrams is a great book about herbal medicineWww@Answer-Health@Com

Nope!.

A lot of people assume that because some thing is supported by the NHS it must be valid!. But the NHS is budget led, and often it is in their interest to fob people off with a placebo!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My psychiatrist says it may help, but that it has a very mild effect!. Also, you should ask your psychiatrist before you combine it with PaxilWww@Answer-Health@Com

i use to take it!. and it helped i guess!. it can't hurtWww@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, but you need to take it as part of a healthy lifestyle!. Eat *proper* food - if you really want a takeaway, have one every two weeks, go to bed between 10pm and 11pm and wake up at a decent hour (don't sleep in late all the time), go online and find fun things to do in the area you live or start a hobby - something that gives you peasure and isn't a chore, read - or listen to talking books if you don't like reading, about a subject that interests you, make sure that at least one night a week you go out with friends or to a friends house, give the people around you the benefit of the doubt and be kind to them - a little bit of kindness makes everyone involved feel better, look for good things in the world to uplift your spirits rather then dwelling on the awful things in life!. And finally make sure that where you work is friendly and fun!. If it's not, then look somewhere else for a job!. You will spend the majority of your time at work (if you work) and you don't want to spend all that time with people you don't like doing something you hate!.

Of course having said all of that, if the depression is not caused by lifestyle but by a chemical imbalance then I'd at least try it but speak to the Dr again if it doesn't work!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I take St Johns Wort as I have a bit of postnatal depression and I didnt want to go on any antidepressants!.
They do work but without you really noticing (if that makes sense!)
I stopped taking them after 2 months thinking i'd be ok but after about a week I could really tell the difference!. so I am back on them again now!.
The results are very subtle but effective at the same time!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
