Anaesthesia has risks no matter what age you are. It is controlled poisoning (that description from an anaesthesiologist). There is no set formulae as to how people will react (for example, my mum feels like she has been hit by a bus, and I suffer no after-effects). There are however, very specific risk factors (like asthma and smoking). Having said all of that, anaesthetics has come a long way. While I detest the chemicals pumped into my system, the risks are getting lower, and the side-effects less.

The surgeon should talk you through the basic risks before you agree to the surgery (this is standard protocol), and then you should have an opportunity to talk to the anaesthesiologist prior to your child's surgery.

You have a right to understand, and ask as many questions as you want. If they are reluctant to answer, you should consider finding doctors that accept your rights in this situation.

Modern anesthesia is very safe.

For ear tubes, it'll be about 10-15 minutes of breathing gas, probably no IV. Your kid might throw up, and will be in a foul mood for the rest of the day, but it's highly unlikely that he/she will have any other problems.

Your child is at greater risk of injury riding in the car with you or playing on a playground.

I'm an anesthesiologist. Done a zillion of these.

Anaesthesia always carries risks, for children, adults and pets too.
You might want to consult a professional Homeopath to see if surgery can be avoided in favour of a less invasive and non-toxic treatment. Plenty of kids have been able to avoid surgery altogether for this problem with Homeopathic care.

do you realize you really didn't even ask a question?

as long as he's otherwise a healthy child he will have no greater of a risk being under anesthesia than any other person in this world.

i'm 24 and i've had 9 surgeries.

Anesthesia is dangerous to everyone. But if it is applied correctly by a licensed anesthesiologist then it is alright. :)
