Phosphate toxicity can occur withoveruse of laxatives or enemas that contain phosphate. Severe phosphate toxicity can result in hypocalcemia, and in various symptoms resulting from low plasma calcium levels. Moderate phosphate toxicity, occurring over a period o fmonths, can result in the deposit of calcium phosphate crystals in various tissues of the body.

The most common cause of phosphate toxicity is renal failure. When phosphoros builds up in the body and is not eliminated via the kidneys, the crystal deposits that occur cause horrendous itching. There is no way to relieve the itching that is caused. Even dialysis does not remove excess phosphorus. Rigorous restriction of phosphates in the diet is the only method to eventually rid the body of phosphates.

There are phosphate binders available. They are taken with food and snacks to reduce the absorption of phosphoros. Nomally these are only available to Chronic Renal Failure patients.

Hyperphosphatemia, a nearly universal complication of kidney failure, is accompanied by hypocalcemia and low serum levels of vitamin D.
