Things to help with chronic constipation?!

Question: Things to help with chronic constipation?
I know this sounds nasty but I need some help. I went to the doctor but the medicine they wanted me to take is so expensive that I can't even begin to afford it. I go sometimes 3.5-4 weeks without ever having a b.m and its starting to cause a lot of discomfort. I stay hungry though so it isn't like it is making me eat any less which in return is makin gme gain weight because what I am taking in isn't being released. Are there any good over-the-counter medications that I can take that will help me go to the bathroom on a normal cycle? I don't expect to go everyday, even though that would be nice, but even if its just once a week. I take magnesium citrate every once in a while but it gives me stomach problems. I would like to also have something that I can take everyday with breakfast or a meal in pill form! All of your advice is very helpful. Thanks!

Try drinking a glass of apple juice ever morning with breakfast, in the meantime, give yourself an enema with warm water to get things moving.

This is a common problem and the solution isn't always easy. But one of the most affordable things you could try is a magnesium supplement. It only costs a few dollars and it will help to bring water into your stool and to balance your nervous system to deal with the constipation at the level of your sympathetic nervous system. I would suggest 400mg of magnesium oxide - 1x when you first wake up and 1x when you go to bed. Drink lots of water as well.

There is only one thing you need, and it's free. Water.

A healthy adult needs to drink 7 or 8 glasses of water a day to keep it regular.

Benefiber and a stool softener might help.

Angela that certainly is not healthy for you to go for weeks with out a bowel movement. Now I know you said you went to the doctor and you couldn't afford the prescription. I used to have constipation problems ever so often and I started drinking apple juice every morning and I ate prunes and peanuts that always helped me better than anything and yogurt is good. Also if you want to try a pill that you can buy across the counter, you can try Senokot that's a good laxative and it won't cause any stomach discomfort, plus you need to drink a lot of water. You just need to slow down and not be in a hurry every day and find the time to sit on the commode until you feel like your bowels are going to move. This is not healthy for you to stay impacted for so many weeks and plus if you continue to eat breads or heavy food you are impacting yourself more and also think about the weight gain. I bet you are most likely having headaches also from this. Good luck to you Angela.

Eating "real" food, not frozen, take-out, fast foods for starters. Buy a good quality probiotic supplement (yogurt contains trace amounts of probiotics). Fruits and vegetables are the best fibre source. Eliminate pastreurized cow milk, and other dairy products as it promotes mucous production that can cause constipation. Stay away from wheat products. Go for other grains and brown rice.
OTC products tend to cause dependancy and then you won't be able to "go" without them. This is the worst way to deal with this problem.

Did you tell the doctor you couldn't afford the medicine?
Its not like they hang around the pharmacy and keep track of the costs; they prescribe what they feel is best for you and often don't have a clue what it costs.
There are always cheaper alternatives. Just ask.
The last time I was sick, my doctor started writing out a prescription for an antibiotic that I knew was over $100 for a 5 day supply that you take only once a day. When I mentioned the cost factor, she switched to the same antibiotic but now I had to take it 3 times a day for 10 days and it didn't come in a fancy blister pack and it cost $4.00.
If you have already done all the usual things to help with this, like eating high fiber foods, drinking lots of water, eating lots of fruit, etc, you might have a condition that causes this and NEED that medication.
Weight gain is the not worst thing about constipation but keeping all those toxins inside you from digested food is not good. Your bowels are a cleaning system and like a toilet, must be kept running or all is NOT well.
