You should definitely be going more than once a week or so, but the amount of food you eat has little to do with how much you use the bathroom. Rather it's WHAT you eat. Dairy products (like cheese) tend to cause constipation when eaten in large amounts, whereas fiber-rich foods like bran and broccoli help to keep you "regular."
The laxatives should be taken ONLY AS DIRECTED, since your body CAN for an addiction to them fairly quickly. And only take them until you use the bathroom next time. Then just change your diet to a healthier one (eating more yogurt will also help).
You should definitely be going more than once every couple days. Before going straight to the laxatives you might want to consider some more natural ways to increase your metabolism. Look for foods that are high in fiber like oats and vegetables.
Should you feel bad about taking laxatives? No, but be careful you do not want to get so that you are depending on them.
Good luck!

There is no correct answer to "how often should I have a bowel movement?". Some people feel uncomfortable if they don't go 2 or 3 times a day, other people feel jjst fine if they go just once a week. Every body is different. An average would be one bowel movement a day, but that is just an average. If you go once a week, but your BMs come out easily and painlessly, and you don't feel uncomfortable or bloated in between, then you're fine. If you have 2 BMs a day, but they come out hard and cause you pain, and you feel bloated in between, then you're constipated. Being constipated will NOT cause you to gain 25 lbs. Just make sure you're eating a healthy diet, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to ensure that you're getting enough fiber (and if you don't, consider taking a fiber supplement), and you'll be fine.
