Is 5-htp good to take for anxiety?!

Question: Is 5-htp good to take for anxiety?
I'm 15 and get bad anxiety and find it hard to sleep. I don't want to go to the doctors so can I buy 5-htp over the counter? What are the risks? Can I just take it when I need to?

There are more negative side effects then beneficial effects. It can cause serious heart problems and it crosses the blood brain barrier which is almost never a good thing.

You should try melatonin instead. It will calm you down and help you sleep it is a very important hormone. There are far fewer side effect then with 5-htp and they aren't nearly as severe. You can purchase this at any vitamin shop.

5 HTP is the metabolic precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin [1]. 5 HTP is a naturally occuring amino acid in your body and it is available over the counter. Speaking in general terms if you are not currently taking any medications and you start with a low dose (50mg - 100mg) then there are few side effects [2].

5 HTP has a great record when it comes to anxiety. [3] There are many people who have tried using it and have experienced tremendous changes in their lives. You should of course talk with your parents and your doctor before you try any supplement, but when you compare 5 HTP to prescription drugs you will find that 5 HTP is a good alternative. Consider this quote from the 4th link "One such researcher, writing in Neuropsychobiology, sums up the findings this way: "Of the 17 reviewed studies, 13 confirm that 5-HTP has true antidepressant properties."

I would encourage you to do more research on 5 HTP. Also check out the user reviews of 5 HTP to see what other people are saying both positive and negative.
