They used to think these were caused by a mild mineral deficiency: zinc or calcium. Now they say that it is mostly likely down to mild trauma to the nail bed so if you work with you hands you might get more of these.

They are nothing to be alarmed about really. Eat healthily.....milk and milk based products, sesame seeds, sardines and anchovies for calcium, and nuts and seeds for zinc. Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium. And though you also need copper for heath...too much copper in the diet can knock out zinc.....so don't use copper pots for cooking. Trauma to the nail beds might be difficult to avoid if you work with your hands.

If you meant any other white marks other than small flecks then see a medical doctor or pharmacist because more extensive whitening or yellowing could be an indication of a fungal infection.
