Colds & Flu are caused by viruses, which no general medicines have any effect on.

The over-the-counter cough stuff and cold/flu treatments do help relieve the symptoms & make you feel less unwell for a while, even if they don't affect the virus or how infectious you are.

It's a balance between feeling better and not taking excess painkillers to mask the symptoms.

Overall health plays a big part in recovery, someone who is already unwell or not eating properly is going to be worse affected by colds & flu than someone who is generally fit.

Because there is no cure for the cold. You can only use the medicine to relieve the symptoms (runny nose etc) The virus is in the nose and the nose becomes runny to flush out the virus. So if you take medicine to stop the runny nose you stop the body's natural defence to the cold.

some people would rather take the medicine to feel better, others will rather let nature take it's course.

Medicines have always been used and there is little difference across the world.

Because they don't know any better!

Most people are under the impression that there exists a molecule called "cold medicine", and that this molecular entity is sold under the trade name "Nyquil?". Thus, all they have to do is trundle on over to the local Kroger and purchase a $7 bottle of syrup.

In actuality, cold are caused by viruses and must be allowed to run their course. *Symptoms* can be treated via OTC products, but those products must be carefully selected according to the symptoms they treat. Shotgun approach stuff like Nyquil? is rarely optimal.

take some meds for a cold be gone in a week if do not take them it be gone in 7days

they have common sense. further burdening your body with toxic treatments isn't a smart thing to do.
