I can taste my ear drops?!

Question: I can taste my ear drops?
I'm having problems with my right ear, so I've been putting drops in my ear.
For some odd reason, today the ear drops hurt my ear really bad and the pain continued for 30 minutes.
And now, I think I can taste the ear drops in the back of my throat.
Is that normal?

Yep this is normal. Although it is a sealed system, the ear drum has some permeability which is why you can't taste them immediately as the fluid has to diffuse through. it then drains into the throat via the Eustachian tubes.

Nitram isn't a doctor, he's an engineer. He knows almost nothing about medicine and even less about alternative medicine. I implore you not to listen to someone who takes the advice form a cage fighter that absorbing Semen is good for you when someone asked if ingesting semen is good for you.

If you want to know how to build a bridge he's your man. If you want to know about healthcare ignore him.

So that we don't continue to split hairs instead of going to A&E or the ER ring up a healthline and ask them if it is normal or not. They won't take any chances if they ain't sure, they will tell you to go to A&E.
When I was kid I suffered a lot from ENT infections and everytime I used eardrops I could taste them (often you can when you use eye drops too as these drain through the nose into the throat).
I reported this to my doc once and he advised me that it was NORMAL and not to worry about it.

###Morphologic evidence suggests that the layers of the round window participate in resorption and secretion of substances to and from the inner ear, and that the membrane could play a role in the defense system of the ear.####

"Yes. The Eustachian tube runs from the middle ear to the back of the throat for drainage so you may be tasting it."

Well that is true enough, but I hope you realise there isn't suppose to be any kind of connection from the outer ear to the middle ear.

If what you say is true you need to goto A&E or get an emergency appointment with your doctor, it would mean you have a punctured or burst ear drum.

No, the tympanic membrane is not very permeable at all, it's not a mucus membrane it's keratinized you won't get enough passing through such that you can taste it unless there is damage. That's the difference between a doctor and quack like an osteopath who just recites 1/2 remembered truths.

Well although the statement about the ear being connected to your throat area is true i would suggest going to talk to your doctor. Ive read up on some articles about ear infections that affect the mouth and throat. Its just an ear infection and maybe the ear drops are irritating the ears causing it. This type of infection leaves a thin thick feeling layer of phlegm in the mouth and throat that cant really be swallowed away. If your feeling that then you have an ear infection. If you have health insurance just pay a still not too reasonable price to go talk to him and see if he can figure it out

Sadly most ppl on these feeds arent doctors and if there are cant consult you over a yahoo answers question :/

simliar problem, research on that problem

Pretty yucky huh?
