I responded to your other question about painkillers and wanted to see what this show stopper person wrote to answer this question. Do not listen to her at all. Her information is totally backwards. I work in a pain mgmt facility, and am a user because I have pain, and I cant believe her responses. First off, codeine is bad? but vicoden is good? Vicoden (hydrocodone) contains codeine! so contradiction...Vicoden = codeine + tylenol. Your tolerance does not get lower and lower it gets higher and higher. Hence high tolerance means you require higher doses of medicine to get desired pain relief results.

Oxycodone(percocet) is a stronger painkiller than hydrocodone(Vicoden). Oxycotin is similar to oxycodone but they are actually different despite popular belief. Morphine is not even in the same category because morphine is a long lasting painkiller. All opiates have similar ingredients as they all have codeine in them but use the drug differently to get desired results.

Show stopper: you probably believe oxycodone is not good because people with 0 pain and a not so high tolerance for pain medication will get sick/nausea if they take a stronger dose out of their tolerance levels.

If you really have pain then discuss a long acting painkiller with your doctor. It will help you because you get the "high" or feeling good feel constantly. Plus if you keep taking short acting pills as you are (technically they are called break through pain medications) then you will keep increasing your dose every few days or your pain will return. If you take a long acting pain medicine then you will not have to continue to increase dosage. I would ask for fentanyl (say you read online low doses work for long term pain) . Its a patch that lasts 72 hours (3 days) and constantly pumps you full of painkillers so you keep feeling good without increasing your dosage, only down side is you need some tolerance to pain meds in order to get it or it could kill you.( I dont mean 2-3 days I mean 1-3 months) If you really want to know more email me mktantillo@yahoo.com. Ill give you proper information as I do work in pain mgmt. I don't even know your injury but I could probably tell you what works best. If your abusing Ill give you some info too so you can feel good but not kill your body.

It really depends on the type (source) of pain.
As in, purt-near totally depends on the source of the pain.

I would be leary of using opiates for skeletal or adhesion pain management, because people always seem to get sucked into a downward spiral, and there might be better alternatives for you.

If you live near a large university or large hospital system, I would contact them and see if they have a "pain management clinic" and see if you can get a consultation with them, and if they suggest something other than pain medications, take it under advisement. Often people hear "physical therapy" and shudder, thinking "I can't lift my arm how am I supposed to do thaaaaat".

Anyhow, that is what I would do - see a pain managment specialist.
Good Luck

i've been taking pain killers for a few months now for my siaticia (back pain). I've taken 2 or 3 differnt kinds as I am told they are additive and usless after long use anyway so you need to keep changing to different kinds. I don't know the names off hand but as long as doctor knows what doing who cares. My back pain wa intense and after a month or so of taKING them they work great now as long as you keep taking them regurally weather you are in pain or not because it needs to stay in your blood stream. I must take every 4 hours and when i forget to take them because i am feeling fine I can feel the pain return untill i get back on track. Watch it though I am told that you can not take more then 4 times a day as can cause fatal liver damage leading to death so its not something to overdose on; they can be very dangerous although they work great if taken as directed

try to avoid painkillers, they destroy your liver.

Most effective painkillers are codeine and marijuana. Codeine is addictive so be careful.
