Am I able to take a multivitamin tablet alongside an Iron supplement?!

Question: Am I able to take a multivitamin tablet alongside an Iron supplement?
I am currently on a once a day 200mg Ferrous Sulphate pill, I was wondering, would it still be fine to take my usual multivitamin alongside it?

No problem whatever. The amount of ferrous sulphate in a common multivitamin or men's multivitamin is usually something like 20 mg. In a women's multivitamin it is probably more like 50 mg.

The amount of actual iron in the 200 mg ferrous sulphate tablet is a lot less than 200 mg and only about 20-40% of that is likely to be actually absorbed.

I don't suggest taking a multivitamin with an iron supplement, because of the risk of too much iron. Check the dosage of iron on your multivitamin. It is possible to overdose on iron, so if you're getting a daily amount that's too much, it will cause problems for you. Most adults can tolerate up to 45 mg of iron per day without any side-effects, however the recommended intake varies depending on age, sex, ect. Women should generally take around 25-18 mg of iron per day, and that almost doubles during pregnancy (27 mg) but when they start getting into menopausal years, they should drop down to about 8-10 mg. On the other hand, males in general are suggested to only take around 8-10 mg per day across the board.

If you're having a specific problem (like an iron deficiency), or you were told by your doctor that you should be on it, I would suggest staying on the Ferrous Sulphate pill. If you're just taking it to supplement your iron intake, I suggest dropping the Ferrous Sulphate pill and sticking with only a multivitamin, as most multivitamins will have 100% of the daily recommended dosage of iron, in addition to all of the other important vitamins and minerals your body needs. This cuts out the need for an additional vitamin, but still assures that you're getting the proper amount of other vitamins.

Just make sure you aren't getting too much iron. Most vitamins and minerals will just flush out of your system with no repercussions if you take more than needed, but iron can actually have adverse affects in too large of doses.

The second link is not necessarily something that will affect you specifically, but it's interesting to consider.

A regular multivitamin would be okay, not one with extra iron or titled "women's".

Yes you can take more than supplement pills
