Can anyone give me a brief overview of what it is about? How it works?

Acupuncture is based on the pre-scientific notions of meridians and qi (vital energy). It was developed by ancient cultures which had no concept of how living organisms work. There is not one shred of evidence for the existence of meridians, they have never been found by any biology lab and there is no mystery about the human body that requires us to even hypothesize them. Modern science has shown that acupuncture works no better than a placebo, which is hard evidence against the existence of meridians, and also against mysterious life force energies.

It doesn't.

You'll obviously find the occasional "I used it when I had a sniffle and I lived through it" type stories but in reality, it's outdated superstitious nonsense.

It's not used in hospitals because it doesn't work.

The rituals connected to it induces a very strong placebo effect. So in just about any issue a placebo can help you with, acupuncture can be used.

By an elaborate placebo only.

It doesn't.

Well I wish I was listening better in class the other day. My professor was telling a story about a woman who actually had surgery with only using acupuncture and no? drugs. Not that i'm answering your question but sure was interesting. I don't understand why some deny alternative medicine as? a whole and deny it works for anyone when clearly in some instances it does. I however won't be trying surgery this way!

Here is some evidence that shows it is very effective for the treatment of certain conditions:
