Is this oil extract safe?!

Question: Is this oil extract safe?
I mixed 2:1:1 of olive oil, peppermint (dry), and chamomile (dry flowers), respectively, and let it sit in a air tight/dark container for a month, in hopes to make a soothing/invigorating massage oil.
I know concentrated essential oils are dangerous in high amount, so I'm wondering about the toxicity of this mixture. It's not concentrated, nor is it distilled/pressed oils.
Would it be safe for us as full body massage oil?

What you've done is an oil infusion, it's not "essential oils." Perfectly safe for topical use as massage oil.

Placing the herbs in olive oil and allowing them to essentially "steep" will not have the same effect on drawing out the toxic chemicals. It will draw out some medically active chemicals from the plant... and it will impart the scent, which is lovely. As you mentioned, there's no concentration of the toxicities with this method.

Essential oils are typically made by a steam distillation process and the process does indeed maximize the extraction of potentially toxic substances (usually the terpenes.)

And just for completeness of information - - the toxicities of essential oils typically center around INTERNAL use. (There are some exceptions. But typically these are only an issue when they're OVER-used, like multiple applications of wintergreen oil daily to relieve muscle pain, for example.) For "massage oil" purposes, you would be perfectly safe adding a few drops of peppermint oil and a few drops of chamomile oil to your massage oil carrier.

Much of this information here is good, but Im afraid much of the information on essential oils is incorrect. Therapeutic grade oils are not dangerous when used according to the safety protocols. I use them internally and externally on a daily basis.

Most of the dangers of oils come from the fact that people are using aromatherapy or fragrant grade oils that are distilled with solvents for medicinal use; and harvested with pesticides and herbicides. Anything used in excess can be dangerous but therapeutic grade oils when used correctly can be used during pregnancy; and with animals and children.

The best way to make massage oils is to use a mixture of base oils and blend several therapeutic grade oils into the base oil. Olive oil is heavy and will degrade quickly with air and light. Experiment with the scent or the purpose of your oil. ie, relaxation; sports massage, etc.

Below there is a link on all the correct information you will need to know on essential oils. :)

Essential oils should be used with caution. Essential oils are many times more potent than dried herbs. Just like any medicine, essential oils can be harmful if they are not used carefully or properly.

Wear suitable gloves and eye and face protection when working with essential oils. Prior to mixing oils, be sure to read everything you can about the oils and their effects. The use or handling of essential oils should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy. In fact, all essential oils should be used with caution.

Some basic procedures should therefore be observed in order to ensure safety but also the quality of the oils in storage. Only small quantities of essential oil combinations should be made up at a time, as vegetable oils combined with the essences, tend to oxidize and turn rancid. Once oils start to turn cloudy or smell rancid they should be disposed of.

Essential oils should be kept out of reach of children. It is also advisable to fit bottles that don't have a dripolator (orifice reducer) with a child proof cap for safety reasons.

Olive oil is safe. I use it for a moisturizer for my face twice daily. I don't think dry peppermint and chamomile would have any essential oils in them since they are dried. For the full properties of the peppermint and chamomile I would suggest you use pure essential oils. For one tablespoon of olive oil, use about 3 to 6 drops of the essential oils of the peppermint and chamomile. Each essential oil does different things. Peppermint would be stimulating, and is good for digestion. Lavender essential oil is very good for skin. You don't have to let it sit for any length of time. You can use it right away. For massage oil you can safely use olive oil with a few drops of essential oil. The only problem would be if someone is allergic to olives or peppermint, etc.
