Metamucil question? 10 POINTS!!?!

Question: Metamucil question? 10 POINTS!!?
I've been having a lot of stomach/intestinal problems for months now. My mom has IBS, and I'm thinking I might too. She takes smooth texture Metamucil powder that mixes with water. I want to take it and see if my symptoms improve. It says it takes effect in 12 to 72 hours. I really want to try it, but I don't want to have diarrhea or something suddenly this weekend, or any time at school. Is it a strong laxative? When does it usually take effect for you?

its not a laxative---its fiber...

use LESS than they recommend to start with...if you take the full amount, you may spend a day i the bathroom....take a small amount for 3 days (1x/day) if that doesn't work.....add a little more for the next 3 days..

i know on the pill bottle they tell you to take way to much for most people

Metamucil is not all it seems - or, more correctly, it's MORE than you think it is.

The info below is directly from the metamucil site. Yes, it DOES contain psyllium, but it contains MUCH MORE SUGAR than PSYLLIUM

SMOOTH TEXTURE ORANGE FLAVOUR METAMUCIL:

Ingredients: Psyllium Husk, Maltodextrin, Citric Acid (Maltodextrin = a SUGAR)

Supplement Facts
Serving Size:1 rounded Tbsp (11 g)

Amount Per Serving%DV*: Calories 45 / Total Carb. 12g4%* / Dietary Fiber 3g12%* / Soluble Fiber 2g? / Sugars 9g? / Iron 0.8mg4% / Sodium 5mg<1% / Potassium 30mg<1%

* Percent Daily Values (DV) are based on a 2,000-calorie diet / ? Daily Value (DV) not established.

If 'One Serving' = 11gm, AND the amount of Sugar per serve is 9gm, that means, at most, you get ONLY 2gm of Psyllium in each serve!!

WHAT THAT MEANS IS Metamucil is 81.8% Sugar and ONLY 18% Psyllium

Aside from anything else, that's an awefully expensive price to pay for sugar!

You can buy 100% Psyllium at a health food store - I suggest that this is a better option.

NOTE: Maltodextrin is just 'sugar by another name' - the other Metamucils contain sucrose (sugar), polysorbate (artificial sweetener), aspartame (artificial sweetener) - the artificial sweeteners may give you exactly the diarrhoea you're trying to avoid!

They use it to treat diarrhea too, so you don't have to worry about it - it's not gonna have any drastic effect. It's not all that much different than eating a bowl of cereal.

Metamucil is fiber. It is not a laxative. Try it to see if it helps you and then you'll know.

metamucil is psylium husk its mainly just high in fiber you wont get diarrhea you should b fine
