Bruise after acupuncture? Help!?!

Question: Bruise after acupuncture? Help!?
I had acupuncture for the first time today. It was really relaxing and didn't hurt but i just noticed a small swollen bruise on my right wrist where one of the needles was. It is a small bit sore if i press it. Is this common? Will it go away after a few days? Any advice or suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi. I am a registered acupuncturist. I'm sorry to hear you had a bruise after your treatment. It is something that can happen now and then but definitely not anything to worry about. Normally the needle does not pierce the blood vessel and that is why there is usually no bleeding. Occasionally the needle can prick the capillary which causes the blood to leak out a bit under the skin which can cause a small lump and a bruise. For some people who bleed easily or if you are taking blood thinning medications, it is more common. You don't need to do anything - it should disappear within 3-6 days.

Some advice for next time - if you notice it happening again, immediately following the treatment, put pressure on the area with your fingers for 1 minute. This stops the vessel from bleeding and should prevent the bruise. Please don't let that experience turn you off acupuncture - it is such a wonderful way to improve your health naturally and make you feel fantastic!
