What is the hype about Iodine?!

Question: What is the hype about Iodine?
There is a "Doctor" hawking Iodine and Iodide as a weight loss enhancer that creates an efficient thyroid thereby encouraging weightloss for a mere $25.00 a month. What is the reality of an iodide and iodine deficiency in NJ? I thought we should all cut down on salt, not take suppliments. I am 60 yrs. old and my Mom is 97, we have perfect BP and I control our diet. I have started to gain weight ( 60 yrs.old!) and wonder if there is any validity to this. Thanks,

Well, iodine is the heavyweight of the halogen family (I'm not counting astatine because that jerk never sticks around long enough to accomplish anything). It has a distinct violet-blue color and is added to table salt to reduce the occurrence of goiter.

It has absolutely nothing to do with weight loss, thyroid regulation or preventing emo vampires from sparkling in sunlight.

Don't believe the hype. Simply don't.
Iodine supplementation should only run 50 cents for a year (Morton's salt) to 20 dollars a year (inexpensive health food store capsules)....that should tell you something. Besides, you can throw a ton of iodine at your thyroid, and it doesn't mean your thyroid is going to work - those two factors are simply not related.

You started to gain weight because as we age, you can cut your calories by a third just to maintain weight....and no one does that, which is why everyone tends to gain it as they age...

omg the dr needs booting out medical profession,no validity in it at all.there is a connection with thyroid and iodine but doubtful it do what he claims but all things are possible i surppose
