a doctors short lifespan?!

Question: A doctors short lifespan?
is it true that doctors live shorter lives than most other people in other professions (doctors that work in hospitals, perform surgeries, and all that stuff)? Is it due to the amount of stress that they encounter from their profession?

in the developed world most Medical physicians can enjoy a life expectancy greater than 58.
It is a very stressful position and the profession is rife with suicide and in the UK ranks in the top 5 as professions most likely to lead to alcoholism.

Like any profession where you're dealing with peoples lives it's very stressful. The worst I've come across are engineers working on safety-critical systems. I've not met one yet who will drink while working, but off duty are raving alcoholics a lot of them.

"The average life expectancy of doctors is only 58."

I don't believe that. Let's see some evidence

Anyway, it isn't true doctors die younger than average.

"Among both U.S. white and black men, physicians were, on average, older when they died, (73.0 years for white and 68.7 for black) than were lawyers (72.3 and 62.0), all examined professionals (70.9 and 65.3), and all men (70.3 and 63.6). The top ten causes of death for white male physicians were essentially the same as those of the general population, although they were more likely to die from cerebrovascular disease, accidents, and suicide, and less likely to die from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia/influenza, or liver disease than were other professional white men."

The average life expectancy of doctors is only 58. They often eat most unhealthy diets, do not supplement with vitamins and minerals, and pump themselves with drugs whenever they feel something is wrong.
Stress has nothing to do with it...

See the book "Dead Doctors Don't Lie".

I believe doctors do have a shorter life expectancy but the following link raises some doubt.

The statistics of doctor suicide are certainly alarming. http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/80…

Sometimes. But I know some doctors that are old, and very happy. It really just depends on the person and how they handle stress.

many are pill poppers. consider it poetic justice.
