I want to start taking 500mg of L-Tyrosine for depression instead of fluoxetine.!

Question: I want to start taking 500mg of L-Tyrosine for depression instead of fluoxetine. Anyone tried L-Tyrosine?
I have started weaning myself off of fluoxetine 20mg (taking it every 3 days or so) and started adding L-Tyrosine 500mg in to my regime every few days also (not the same day I take the antidepressant obviously). Is this safe? And has anyone tried L-Tyrosine as a natural depression supplement?

Answers:

I've used LTyrosine off and on for a couple of years. It is very good for people in a state of physical and emotional stress, the studies say.

I wouldn't say it is a SUB for anti-depressants... but it has helped in the past when tapering off of Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin has a mildly stimulating effect, and in the past, if I ran out of Wellbutrin for whatever reason, I would be very low-energy and depressed, with very little drive. Taking L-Tyrosine helped greatly with that!

I suggest talking to your doc about getting off meds FIRST and also about supplementing. Most docs dont know a whole lot about this stuff, though, so be warned. The internet is a bounty of information... use it!
