Ativan sleep aid question..advice needed?!

Question: Ativan sleep aid question..advice needed?
Hi, am a 23 years old student of higher education and I have been getting very little sleep for the past two weeks and some days I just cant sleep to a recent emotional trauma.
My doctor recently prescribed 1mg ativan to be cut in half and taken twice daily. The first night of taking this I slept although I woke up abt 4 hours after and found it a bit difficult to go back to sleep.

Then next day however, I took it again but didnt sleep in the night at all. Does this mean I should get him to increase the dose? This has really been disrupting recent my recent studies.

I had previously taken diazepam which enabled me to be able to sleep at nights but he doesnt want me to have long term side effects from it.

Any advice here? Thanks in advance.

Answers:

Ativan is a tranquilizer not a proper sedative which is only for sleep. A group of sedatives called hypnotics mimic normal sleep. As a tranquilizer it's meant to calm you down. If you are getting worked up during the day then take the one during the day. Otherwise just take the night time dose. If you take the whole 1mg at night it also might help, it could also give you a buzz and a hangover. Reactions are very individual. Ativan and the like are used for sleep disturbanc often, the new sedative Ambien CR seems popular. Whatever you do run it by the doctor as soon as you can by phone or appointment. You can increase the dose or change to something else.
