A 25(OH)D blood test shows definitively what your current levels are. Anyone living north of Atlanta in the winter will get NO vitamin D from sunlight at all. So supplementation is necessary. The required form is D3, not D2 (virtually useless).
Check out all the articles and research quoted at Mercola.com for all the info. you could possibly want.
1000 a day isn't "too much". The average rec. by holistic health professionals is around 4,000iu a day in winter.

This is a question for your endocrinologist

Typically if you feel that you need extra vitamin D - then your endocrinologist will measure your vitamin D levels and then your vitamin D level will tell them if you need extra vitamin D or not and then they will tell you how much you need to take every day. And if your level is too high then they will tell you to discontinue the vitamin D supplements. Too much can be toxic to your body so this is something that needs to be medically supervised.

I had extremely low vitamin d levels a few years ago. Severely low - and they gave me vitamin d supplements - in megadoses and then told me to take daily supplements. When my vitamin d level started to improve then it started getting too high and then they told me to quit taking the supplements. So this is something that needs to be monitored by a physician it just isn't something you should do yourself.

1000 units assumes that you get NO sunlight, all day. That you live in a dungeon.

In fact, people RARELY have a vitamin D deficiency; daily activities of moving from building to building usually gets you enough sun. This is something that you should REALLY consult a doctor on. Only they can tell you your levels, and if you need more.
An overdose of Vitamin D will lead to kidney failure- it's not like other vitamins that will just wash out of your system. See a doctor.

I actually do have a vitamin D deficiency. I take 700mg a day.

no it is not to much , dr cannell, md suggest 5,000 units daily , and one thing to remember is the older we get the less vitamin d is produced in the skin , I learned recently that vitamin d is hormonal ,
and it is better that flu shots for prevention colds/flu , if you have enough in your system ,
and vitamin d is anti cancer according to medical doctors and researchers ,
if you want to learn more than click the video links below , dr cannell is in 2 of them , and a couple of the links are about vitamin d and cancer .
and by the way vitamin d fights existing colds and flus , by creating antimicrobial peptides in the blood that literally kill bacteria and viruses , click the links and learn and live

Current recommendations from researchers are for 35iu per pound - a 150# person needs minimum of 5250iu per day & the rda is 400iu. This amount is for minimal needs and does not account for depleted stores. March is when stores are at their lowest.

Vitamin D3 is not a vitamin at all but a necessary hormone that effects the immune system & nearly every aspect of health. Having low Vitamin D levels greatly increases risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, MS & being deficient can create or greatly exacerbate health problems.

The prescription vitamin D supplements are the wrong type (ergocalciferol ). As warned by the National Institute of Health -

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17023…

Luckily you can buy vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) over the counter and the upper limits are extremely high.

Vitamin D3 deficiency is becoming an epidemic. U.S. RDA are much too low. It is possible that upper atmosphere pollution is blocking the needed UVB light from the sun.

I also highly recommend a low carb way of eating to allow the body to regenerate rather than degenerate.

25(OH)D test level is between 50–80 ng/ml (125–200 nmol/L), summer and winter

http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/health/de…

In northern latitudes (above that of Atlanta, Georgia) the sun is at too low an angle for half the year to provide sufficient UV radiation. Most people need to take vitamin D, especially seniors, as the ability to synthesize vitamin D in the skin declines with age.

With exposure to sunlight in the summer, the body can generate between 10,000 IU and 20,000 IU of vitamin D per hour with no ill effects. In addition, no adverse effects have been seen with supplemental vitamin D intakes up to 10,000 IU daily.

Always take your vitamin D with a fat-containing meal to ensure absorption.

Dr. Joe Prendergast, an endocrinologist /diabetologist has managed over 1500 diabetic patients and, in the last decade, not one of his patients has had a stroke or heart attack. Only one has even been hospitalized! His secret—50,000 units of Vitamin D3 daily. Dr. Joe further reports:

* Reversal of advanced coronary disease
* Reversal of advanced lung disease, avoiding a lung transplant!
* Cure of multiple sclerosis
* Cure of amotrophic lateral sclerosis
* Regression of rheumatoid arthritis
* Improvement in allergies
* Control of many cancers including prostate, breast, colon, brain tumors, leukemia, myeloma, etc
* Reversal of osteoporosis
* Prevention of influenza
* Cure of depression and many other mental disorders
* Hashimoto’s hyperthyroidism

In summary, the evidence for safety and remarkable efficacy of Vitamin D3 suggests that virtually ALL adults should probably take 50,000 units of D3 daily. This is certainly true for those with virtually any illness.

That is actually low. There is no limit to your intake. When you are out in the sun for 30 minutes you absorb close to 20,000 iu.I usually take around 5,000 in the winter. Make sure you take it with calcium because vit d needs calcium to absorb in the body. The average crappy multi-vitamin you will find at the store will have around 400iu which is useless. Don't look at the RDA, those are standards set by the FDA who hates nutritional supplements, vitamins, and herbs. Do some credible research and you will find how much you will actually need.

Katie I think that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Read a book on nutrition.

you technically need less about 800 iu. but you also make a great deal of vitamin D if you go out in the sun. If you have darker skin pigment you may make less but you cannot over dose on Vit D so take the 1000 iu and see if you feel better and if you do keep taking it. If you see no change after the first bottle dont buy more.

Ask your doctor to do a blood test on your Vitamin D levels. This will show if 1000mg a day is enough for you or whether you need to vary the dose. The dose varies according to the individual and also seasonal sun exposure.

You need to take Vitamin D3- You can take up to 5000iu per day

living in sacramento and winter time I take 5000 a day
and I agree with above, Katie do some research
