One of the more generic trends is a population that is increasingly suspicious of the big corporates. There are so many stories coming out about underhanded if not outrightly illegal behaviour. So more and more people are less inclined to believe the lies or fudging that passes for corporate reporting and publicity.

One of the biggest kicks to this trend was the recent financial crisis. How many people do you think are quietly boiling as they hear about the massive bonuses that are again being paid to the CEOs of banks and financial institutions? While too many people are now jobless, homeless, or struggling to pay the bills.

To condense it, more and more people do not trust information provided by corporates or industry bodies. And so you see a bigger and bigger turn away from the products or services of these big corproates. And, as they scrabble to grab back their market share, their advertising is aimed at pumping up their image, making themselves appear more sympathetic, more ethical, more on the side of the public. But the fact is, if they really were responsible corporate citizens, it wouldn't have taken falling profits to raise their awareness.

There are many different things that are contributing to the increase in the favourability of Alt Med. But lack of trust in the pharmaceutical industry is one of the factors.

I can name two. One, doctors just don't care anymore. It's become like a fast food drive-thru...in / out, in / out. If you don't respond to the doctor's first treatment, out the door with you and onto the next patient. (The T.V. show "House" is a million miles from reality. No doctor spends that much time on a patient.)

And two...many pharmaceutical drugs either don't work or have horrendous side effects.

If you add these two factors together, what do you get? A trend away from pharmaceuticals and toward herbals with the "patient" trying his (or her) damnest to get well on his own.

Medical Marijuana is allowing more and more people to reduce their intake of highly priced pharmaceuticals. Once the classification of Cannabis has been rescheduled, I can assure pharmaceutical companies are going to be doing their best to extract the best strains into pills.

The age of the internet and free information means their bad practice is exposed for all to see. Rather than clean up their act they are being more covert and trying to destroy non pharma competition underhandedly by supporting sites like quackwatch and whats the harm which exaggerate or go as far as lie to get an emotional reaction which encourages people to think negatively of alternatives.

Consequently because of freedom of information, less people trust their doctors and people in authority because their bad behaviour is being exposed repeatedly.
The public aren't all stupid. Authority has to learn to treat the public with more respect.

medical marijuana. It can be used for so many different purposes, it knocks out a lot of the medications for the same symptoms.

immense research on the medical marijuana industry

The fad of wasting money on herbal crap. Most herbal medicines are sold by "Big Pharma" under different labels. They saw how much money was in it, and they started selling it. Why bother spending so much money on research, development and testing when you can just slap some lies on a bottle of weeds and morons will buy it for so much money.

Marijuana might have an effect, but no more than one new drug. No real testing has been done on it yet so we don't actually know its potential. The only people who think it's going to be a pancea are the people who just want to get high all the time.

By the way, "effect" is a noun and "affect" is a verb.
