Exercise is the biggest factor. Outside of that, lower your stress (exercise is good for this as well) as stress can actually raise your bad cholesterol (your LDLs). Modifying your diet may also be beneficial.

You need your individual numbers to best determine your diet - your LDL, your HDL, and your Triglycerides. If your Triglycerides are higher than normal, you need to consider cutting back on grains like pasta, bread, etc.

Overall, try avoiding foods that have "partially hydrogenated oils", as this is transfat and can affect your cholesterol drastically. Avoiding egg yolks and eating only the whites is another easy to do thing (or get eggbeaters, which spares you from having to separate the egg and waste part of it)

Had a cholesterol level of 279 a few years back (it was supposed to be under 180 based on my age, weight, and height)

Studies have shown that if you eat a grapefruit every day your cholesterol will drop by 15% after 30 days. Texas Sweet grapefruits are sweet, and any grapefruit with pink or red flesh will taste sweeter, so if you're not a grapefruit fan, try those varieties.

Eat a high fiber diet. This scrubs the system of cholesterol. Exercise and water flush the system. Meditation helps reduce the creation of cholesterol in the body as a stress response.

Fish oil, and garlic. Take more than the recommended dosage! Exercise and eat right.
