Answers:

First, let me clarify the difference between typhoid and paratyphoid. They are similar but are caused by different bacteria and transmitted to humans via water contaminated by feces. Typhoid is much more serious than paratyphoid and can cause intestinal hemorrhage and death if not treated. Both diseases are fairly prevalent in developing nations that have inadequate access to safe drinking water. The rates of infection int he US is quite low in comparison with an average of 400 cases of typhoid per year and 150 cases of paratyphoid per year according to the Centers for Disease Control. They are both slow in onset, with symptoms appearing anywhere form a week to a month after exposure, They are easily treated with antibiotics, often ciprofloxin, or cipro. given over the course of 10 to 14 days. It is important to take the entire course of antibiotics in order to make sure the bacteria are gone; not doing so because you feel better can actually leave active bacteria in yoru system, only now they are resistant to antibiotics and can not only make you ill again, but can much more difficult to treat. Most Americans who develop the illnesses have been exposed when they traveled overseas and drank contaminated water or had a drink with ice that was contaminated..
Bottom line is that if you have paratyphoid, you have the more mild of the 2 diseases and it is typically accompanied by a low grade fever, fatigue and gastrointestinal symptoms. It is very important that you take the antibiotics as your Doctor prescribed them You should begin feeling better in a few days and be as right as rain i a couple of weeks.Don't worry, but in the future when you are traveling overseas, stick to bottled water and stay away from ice, and fruit that has the peel on.
