How do you make a toddler take medicine?!

Question: How do you make a toddler take medicine?
I have a cousin who hates to take any form of medicine. We've tried every sort, liquid, chewable, flavored, etc. To get him to actually swallow the medicine he is pinned down, his nose is held shut forcing him to open his mouth, and it is forced down. I'm afraid that this could emotionally harm him. Now he is terrified and cries, screams, hides, and even throughs up after taking it. He is about 3 years old, is there any way to convince him to take medicine willingly or atleast in a less painfull way?

Answers:

Pinning him down and shoving it down his throat is NOT THE ANSWER!! You do that to an animal, not a child!!

If he is REALLY sick, take him to a doctor and let the doctor tell you how to do it. If it is just a cold and he needs antibiotics, open the capsule or melt/crush the tablet and put it in some sweet juice or something he likes to eat - ice cream, pudding, mashed potatoes.
