Hypothyroidism, what to do?!

Question: Hypothyroidism, what to do?
I am trying to lose weight, although I have hypothyroidism. I take Levothyroxine to control my hypothyroidism. I am looking to stop taking this medication. Are there any remedies or other types of treatment that would have the same basic effect, or better than the medicine?

I am looking into joining the military, and compete in some brutal races. I am 6'4 and weight 293 lbs and 18 years old. <--- More background information that might possibly help?

Answers:

I have hypothyroidism as well and take the same medicine. As for alternatives to Levothyroxine, I'm not sure if there are any...if you have a very mild case you might be able to raise your thyroid levels through diet, exercise, and other methods to compensate for coming off the meds. But if you have a severe case like me, you will probably need to take the medicine. Just wondering, is there any specific reason you need or want to stop taking this medicine?

I am 6'3, 215 pounds and I'm in pretty good shape. I'm getting into powerlifting and have low body fat. So it is possible to be slim, muscular, or in shape with your thyroid disease. And on top of this, I have only been taking meds for it for about two months ago (was diagnosed recently) although I now know that I've had this disease my whole life, I just didn't know about it.

Go ahead and give more background information it won't hurt.

Diets: Stay away from broccoli (supposedly that lowers thyroids) and to lose weight, eat more complex carbs and less simple carbs. In other words, more oatmeal, potatoes, etc and less sugar. Don't starve yourself though. Also eat more protein and drink more water. That with more exercise should get you thinner.

You could try natural desiccated thyroid hormone should you need it. Not everyone needs to take hormones with hypothyroidism but it is a possibility if the thyroid gland is too damaged. A few really good books i have read about treating hypothyroidism naturally...

If you have hashimoto's thyroiditis - autoimmune hypothyroidism (most cases of hypothyroidism are autoimmune - thyroid antibodies TPO and TgAb need to be tested - higher than normal means you have this condition), T4 medications like levothyroxine are doing nothing to prevent the antibodies attacking the thyroid gland. A gluten free diet is shown to lower the antibodies attacking the thyroid gland and 200mcg daily of selenium is shown in clinical trials to lower TPO antibodies. A good source of selenium is brazil nuts.

EVERYBODY is dependent upon thyroid hormones, some just need to get it from an external source (such as a pill).

Don't fall for scam treatments (spinal adjustment) or quack "herbal" remedies (selenium, Co-Q10, powdered porcupine piss, etc.). Levothyroxine is proper medicine, and you DON'T want to stop taking it once you've established a euthyroid state.
