Start with a guided meditation program. As the name suggests, it's a meditation/relaxation technique that has music in the background and voice instructions that you follow to achieve a calmer state. As you listen to the instructions, your breathing gets slower and deeper, while your body gently eases into a meditative trance-like state.
While some people are more "suggestible" to natural relaxation techniques than others, what guided meditation does in simply make the process easier. This works if you don't have access to a spiritual teacher or wish to do things in a secular, personal way.

Look for a quiet place to do the secular meditation. It can be done at home, in the room, living room or garden. Make sure that you are alone, so that you get to come up with an inner peace in you. Close your eyes, clear your mind and start relaxing. You can also do breathing exercises because it will help you relax your body.
