I need help with acid reflux please?!

Question: I need help with acid reflux please?
My mom is having trouble with acid reflux often, she's got medicine but it's a pain when she runs out and taking medicine everyday doesn't seem like a cure... well anyways I tried looking on the internet and the information seems to be all over the place, does anyone have good sites or info or personal experiences they'd be willing to share that WILL generally help acid reflux be more bearable or maybe even non existent?

there are many things she can do to help with acid reflux that cost nothing and DO work.
1. Do not eat anything greasy or spicy before bedtime. No carbonated beverages either. In fact you should not eat anything directly before bed.
2. Raise the head end of the bed about 8-10 inches or more. Do no use extra pillows. Its not the same. Use wood blocks under the head end of the bed to accomplish this. This allows gravity to help.
3. Eat yogurt often. Any good quality active culture yogurt will help.
My eldest daughter has this and these tricks keep it under control for the most part.

Sometimes medicine can worst the condition. Try to modify her diet by reducing intake of fatty foods, caffeinated beverages, chocolates and alcohol. Avoid eating large meals, try to eat 5-6 small meals during the day to prevent gastric pressure that induces reflux. Try to chew food thoroughly.

I had tried Zantac, Tagamet, and Nexium with no success. Pepcid at 20 mg twice a day eased the discomfort, and did so well. I purchase generic Pepcid - Famotidine off reputable PharmacyNextDoor.com
By the way, the acid reflux resolved itself when I quit drinking caffeine
Try looking on drugs.com and rxlist.com these sites have lots of useful information about acid reflux.
hope your Mom gets better soon.

Omeprazole, marketed as Prilosec? OTC.

There is no cure for acid reflux; you just have to treat or endure it.

Some medicines can make it worse and not cure it. Try looking at her diet. From the inside out these problems start. Sip water for immediate relief. Green tea is good too

Hi, I just answered a similar question for another yahoo asker about an hour ago so I'll just cut and paste the answer below. Their issue was acid reflux related to intestinal candida. I've listed a few sites that may help. As a lot of these gut issues are interrelated. This may not be your mothers exact cause of her acid reflux but she may find some valuable information on the sites below. She may not need to adhere to the strict diet, as it may be as simple as a few diet adjustments but it's a place to start.

I do occasionally get it if I go off the restricted diet I'm on and I take a tums to help. But I would not recommend using tums long term as a preventative.

Here was the question asked:
I have been battling acid reflux for years now. With vitamins and a change in my diet I have been able to eliminate the severity by about 60%, but still have ongoing problems with it. I was doing some reading about this cleanse to clean out the colon and digestive tract. I was wondering if anyone has had any reviews regarding this.

And my answer:
Sorry that you have been suffering. There are so many layers to finding out what's actually going on the the digestive track. It may not be 1 specific thing, like candida, although I believe that's a huge part of it. As different people have different triggers for acid reflux. Only you will know once you figure it out what are your triggers and why.

I hope the info below will give you some guidance on where to go with this. And I will make it as brief as possible.

I got acid reflux 4 years ago. Took out all of the known triggers that they say to do (coffee, wine, tomatoes etc) helped about 20%. I did not want to take a reflux medication. I went to a naturopath who specialized in nutrition and she gave me some info to read about food sensitivity diets. She also clued me in on the fact that my history of antibiotic use has killed off a lot of the beneficial flora in my digestive tract. That flora is needed for healthy digestion and it keeps candida at bay. I won't bore you with my trial and error of what foods I took out (gluten and dairy are a few) and what worked and didn't. I did however settle on the SCD plan: Specific Carbohydrate Diet. (Some people call it the Paleo diet). I did it for a year and it worked. I noticed a drastic change within the first 24 hours. Basically it's taking out all grains and starches as they are complex sugars that your gut, being that it's not functioning properly, has trouble digesting. That unabsorbed sugar is now food for the candida in your gut. So even if you are eating healthy whole grains its still a complex sugar. It's not a diet you need to be on forever but they show you how to build your system back up.

I started cheating about a year ago and over time got worse. The reflux came back. I started back up on the SCD again a month ago and am much happier.

This may not be your complete issue but the links below might give you some incite into how your problem came to be and what you need to do next. Although most of the below sites do not refer directly to acid reflux, it is one of the symptoms. There have now been cook books published since the last time I started it so it makes it much easier. Some of the sites below talk about this diet for autism and other behavioral issues. Elaine Gottschall pioneered this diet for that reason and found that this diet helped those who also suffered from many different digestive disorders.

These pages also have link tabs that will take you to more sites for information and recipes to get you started.

Again, another name as it's also known as the GAPS diet. Not as common as SCD.
