alternative medicines?!

Question: Alternative medicines?
I have a nervous system disorder that makes me very sick. Western medicine is only helping so much. I was kind of raised by my parents who believe in alternative medicine. I'm going to start acupuncture, massage therapy, and possibly biofeedback. I'm also looking into chiropractics. My doctor is very against chiropractors. She thinks it's a dangerous and reckless decision to go to a chiropractor. So if you know about chiropractors, they claim they can heal people's nervous system and restore peoples' health. Since my nervous system is messed up, I'm trying to weigh my risks and benefits of going to a chiropractor. My chiropractor feels he can fix my nervous system (and sculeosis) my manipulation and adjustment of my spine. Are the benefits worth the risks of getting worse? Suggestions please!

Your doctor is right about the chiropractor. Being a chiropractor means disregarding health sciences. There are three main principles in chiropractic, which modern health science tell us are wrong:

1) All diseases are caused by subxluxations of the spine.
- In reality chiropractic subluxations don't exist.

2) These subluxations interfere with nerve function.
- Impaired nerve function has not been demonstrated.

3) Correcting these subluxations allows innate (a vitalistic force) to heal the body.
- No such vitalistic force has ever been detected.

It really is a nonsense therapy. So you should really consider if you want to run the risk: http://whatstheharm.net/chiropractic.htm…

I would actually see a chiroprractic nuerologist. This is someone who actually is a doctor of chiropractic but also took additional courses in neurology.

Don't believe the negative garbage some will feed you about chiropractic. I once thought some of the same stuff until no "medical doc" actually helped me. It wasn't until I discovered chiropractic. From my experience, your chiropractor is similar to your other doctors except he doesn't push drugs on you. I'm all for taking medication if needed too.

Like anything else there's good doctors and bad ones. Go see someone and see if they might be able to help.

You haven't specified the nature of your nervous system disorder. It might be worth considering a kinesiologist.

I don't know where you are, but you should be able (on the internet) to find the relevant kinesiology professional association (and from there, locate a practitioner near you).

If you know nothing about kinesiology, try to organise a discussion with the practitioner before you pay for a consultation.

Your doctor is right.

The other lot are not actually going to do you much harm (although acupuncture has been known to pierce the odd organ or create an abscess) it's all generally harmless.

Chiropractor is actually dangerous and is the highest cause of strokes in under 35YOs. You can become crippled, paralyzed or even die. It's been shown they peddle treatments for which there is not a jot of evidence. Avoid at all costs.

Hi, Chiropractics can help if you have pinched nerves. It can also help with scoliosis if it is not too severe. The major nerves that come off your brain go through your spine, so if things are out of place it can definitely make you feel worse. I think a visit to the Chiropractor as long as you are healthy otherwise (no broken bones etc.) can only help.

I'm just a regular person, who goes to a Chiropractor when I feel the need.

you will always get negative answers from "armchair wannabe doctors" if chiropractic were dangerous I'd be dead by now. broke my back in '64 two years later I continued hanging sheetrock for another 23 years went at least once a week and sometimes 3-4 times. retired in'89 and have NO problems other than a back ache occasionally. I don't know about requirements in other states but in California the requirements to be licenced are pretty stiff in fact the same 4yr.courses that md's have to take plus additional courses in anatomy, people should'nt generalize when they don't have a good understanding of the subject.

You probably won't suffer any major harm with Alternative(s to) Medicine. That said, you definitely won't receive any benefit from them.

(Unless you count "proving to myself that they're worthless" as a benefit, which one could argue it is.)

Lots of people have a spine that is crooked, twisted and so forth. Those things are called 'normal abnormalities' because they don't cause problems. I understand your frustration, but that doesn't mean you should try something that might hurt you.
