are Chiropractors safe ?!

Question: Are Chiropractors safe ?
Answers:

Especially neck manipulation is dangerous. And sometimes it goes terribly wrong: http://whatstheharm.net/chiropractic.htm…

Being a chiropractor means disregarding health sciences. There are three main principles in chiropractic, which modern health science tell us are wrong:

1) All diseases are caused by subxluxations of the spine.
- In reality chiropractic subluxations don't exist.

2) These subluxations interfere with nerve function.
- Impaired nerve function has not been demonstrated.

3) Correcting these subluxations allows innate (a vitalistic force) to heal the body.
- No such vitalistic force has ever been detected.

Canada has a government-run national health care system. As occurred with Medicare in this country, there had been such pressure on the Canadian government to include chiropractic as a covered benefit, that the Ontario Ministry of Health hired a renowned heath care economist to make a recommendation. The first “Manga Report” was published in 1993.

This comprehensive study reviewed all the published literature on low back pain and made some astounding suggestions. In a nutshell, it concluded that: chiropractic should be the treatment of choice for low back pain – excluding traditional medical care altogether!

The specific Findings of the report were:

There is an overwhelming body of evidence indicating that chiropractic management of low-back pain is more cost-effective than medical management

Many medical therapies are of questionable validity or are clearly inadequate

There is no clinical or case-control study that demonstrates or even implies that chiropractic spinal manipulation is unsafe in the treatment of low-back pain. Some medical treatments are equally safe, but others are unsafe and generate iatrogenic complications for LBP patients.

Chiropractic is more cost-effective. There would be highly significant cost savings if more management of LBP was transferred from medical physicians to chiropractors.

There is good empirical evidence that patients are very satisfied with chiropractic management of LBP and considerably less satisfied with physician management

The specific Recommendations were:

Chiropractic services should be fully insured under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan

Chiropractic services should be fully integrated into the health care system. Because of the high incidence and cost of LBP, hospitals, managed health care groups, community health centers, comprehensive health organizations, and health service organizations and long-term care facilities should employ chiropractors on a full-time and/or part-time basis

The Safety of Cervical Adjusting

No one pays closer attention to injury statistics than Malpractice Insurance carriers.

Scott Haldeman, MD, DC reviewed malpractice claims records for a 10-year period between 1988 and 1997. In reviewing the outcomes following the application of 134.5 million cervical manipulations (commonly referred to as the chiropractic adjustment), the records indicated that there were 23 reported cases of stroke or vertebral artery dissection (VAD). [10] Of this group, 10 of the patients had the complicating factors of high blood pressure, use of oral contraceptives, or a history of smoking, all of which are associated with vascular disease. The actual incidence of stroke or VAD following cervical manipulation was found to be one per 5.85 million cervical adjustments. That means that the average chiropractor could work for 1430 years (or practice 48 full chiropractic careers!) before they might be involved with this type of litigation.

And to "massage therapist:....The World Health Organization recently released a comprehensive set of guidelines that clearly states that chiropractic is a separate profession, rather than a set of techniques that can be learned in short courses by other health professionals. They also make it clear that medical doctors and other health professionals, in countries where the practice of chiropractic is not regulated by law, should undergo extensive training to re-qualify as chiropractors before claiming to offer chiropractic services. In some countries there have been recent efforts by medical groups to provide short courses of approximately 200 hours in chiropractic technique. WHO’s guidelines indicate that a medical graduate should a require an additional minimum of 1800 class hours, including 1000 hours of supervised clinical training, before claiming to offer chiropractic services. So much for chiros just being manual therapist. Do you really claim to know more than THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION? Just because off your limited exposure and sideline observations does not make you even close to an expert in this area. The knowledge base and education of the average massage therapist is marginal at best. LMTs have basic to no training in anatomy and physiology as well as every other field of human health.
nice backpeddle....fail

Chiropractors are recognized experts in muskuloskeletal issues and are far more likely to be able to resolve any issue of this type than anything you could expect to get from conventional medicine.
Issues about the safety and effectiveness of Chiropractic were dealt with over 30 years ago. Anyone making claims to the contrary is peddling old, anecdotal information and should know better. This is no longer a subject of debate in serious medical circles and hasn't been for a long time.

I'm fairly sure you will have chiropractors and the uninformed answer you that yes it is 100% safe. If you are seeking relief from minor aches and pains, maybe. But remember the only thing they do is crack your joints...for everything. I personally would not let one touch me again. One of the biggest problems of chiropractic,in my opinion,is when they overstep their training. They try to present themselves as "doctors",when in reality they are nothing more than a manipulation therapist. They have very little knowledge of the real workings of the human body. They still cling to the notion that they, and only they, can find and "fix" a nonexistent spinal "subluxation" They frequently delay real medical intervention for a serious problem, because they can fix it with their back cracking. EDIT: So chiropractors have such a vast knowledge of anatomy and physiology? Why bother when you quacks scam sick and unsuspecting patients with crap like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woQHLKUCU… chiropractors you're funny

This question again? It gets a bit boring - can't you use Google or just scroll down or sommat?

It's the largest cause of strokes in under 35 year olds. It can kill, main, cripple you. It has been shown as high as the Supreme Court that they do peddle treatments for which there is not a jot of evidence.

Yes, official ones are perfectly safe(a lot of 'em also studied to be doctors, and physio's).

yes. it is very rare that an injury occurs, and in those rare instances, it is due to some improper application of chiropractic. it stands in stark contrast to medicine which is related to about three quarter million deaths annually in the u.s. alone, mostly from drugs. the rumors of risk are basically scare tactics to keep people away from alternatives to drug based, profit driven allopathic medicine.
