how many iron pills does it take to die?!

Question: How many iron pills does it take to die?
Sooo...while i pregnant i was diagnosed with anemia, and therefore was prescribed iron pills. I can't remember if they told me everything went back to normal or not when my baby was born. However, its been about a year since he was born and i found myself being increasingly tired, exhausted, no energy to even go outside, thining hair, mood swings, just s lot of different things. My mom was diagnosed with a thyroid problem, so she sent me a link online to take a test, which i did, which "diagnosed" me with severe hypothyroidism. Now, i still having the iron pills, she told me i should take them because they may help - and i have, for 5 days now. But then online i read that having too much iron could possibly kill you?? lead to a stroke?? damage my liver?? So now i'm wondering, have i taken too many pills? What if my body wasn't iron deficient? Or should i continue taking them?

Answers:

Iron is a carcinogen. It leads to cancer. You should not take it unless a Dr. tells you too. Do not take them for fatigue. The older generation has a few misconceptions and old wives tales, one of them being that iron deficiency causes fatigue and dark circles.

Most likely you need to just take a multi vitamin and to go outside. Vitamin deficiency, not to be confused with anemia, can cause your hair to fall out.

Lack of sunlight can cause fatigue. Go sit on the porch from time to time. You will undoubtedly feel somewhat better..

No you have not taken so many iron pills that you will die. I do recommend, however, a regular multivitamin. And fresh air.

While taking the iron supplement as directed on the bottle is not likely to kill you, I would highly suggest you see your doctor instead. What you could be experiencing is postpartum depression. It is treated entirely different. You're naturally going to be tired, having a baby, but with the other symptoms you describe, I think a visit to the doctor would be your best bet. I wish you well :)
