has anyone ever had beater blockers for driving test nerves?!


Question: Has anyone ever had beater blockers for driving test nerves?
I'm so nervous about my second driving test coming up.

I have been advised by my instructor to go to the doctors for beater blockers for my anxiety.
(kalms and bachs spray don't work for me)

Has anyone ever had these for their driving test before? If so, did they help?

I am aware of the side effects, and that beater blockers are medically used to treat other things as well as anxiety (my mum is a pharmacist)

I just want to know if they are any good?

I took some before my final clinical exams and they worked a treat. I wish i'd discovered them 10 years earlier when I took my driving test.
I wouldn't want to use them every day, but they are great for getting you out of a corner.

They will calm your anxiety but take a few weeks to build up in your system before taking affect and then you have to come off them gradually you can't just stop so you would be on them for a long time just to help with that one day. Seems a bit extreme to me, you could try learning some relaxation techniques to help you through without medication.



I used a hypnotherapy cd to help me and I think it did. I passed that time, I also used Khalms. I suffer from anxiety all the time and it was very bad during my test. I'd recommend hypnotherapy.

Musicians that try them for performance anxiety often report that they take the edge of their nerves but leave them feeling 'strange' and not able to perform their best.

being nervous, and numbing them with drugs, means that they will return later - only worse. In other words you need to deal with your nerves. If you are ready to drive on the roads then try just focusing on what you're doing. Sometimes getting annoyed can help - if you know you're ready for the roads then the nerves you are experiencing are unfounded and are actually just a sensation - not part of you. Look at the nerves as separate from you and treat them as such. Ignore them.

I failed my first test because of nerves (many moons ago!). Before I even turned the key I said to the tester that I was feeling nervous. He said 'don't you think I feel nervous getting in a car with you', don't worry - he was an exceptional meanie. I promptly failed but I went back with an attitude 2 weeks later and aced it the second time including a real emergency stop!

I'm not saying this to scare you further - the first time I quivered under my nerves, the 2nd time I just fobbed them off because they were taking my right to drive away after all the work and expense I put in. What's more I had to - all my friends already had their licences and I needed it for my job which changed location from one day to the next. It's having an attitude.

When you feel nervous talk it out aloud to yourself..start with What am I nervous about?, answer out loud - Failing my test. Why would you fail, and you'll soon see if there is any justification for feeling nervous. Say it all out allowed and, even better, write the dialogue down so you can see there is nothing concrete to worry about. Remember, if you feel nervous on the day, even terribly nervous, view it as a sensation (that's all it is anyway) and get on with it.
