Does anyone have any tips for quitting smoking?!

Question: Does anyone have any tips for quitting smoking?
Cigarettes have ruined my life, basically. The problem is I'm physically addicted and psychologically dependent on them. What's the best plan for quitting for someone with extremely high stress and anxiety,as well as depression?

Answers:

First of all... stop making excuses. Cigarettes do not help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.... you think they do, but they don't. They may distract you from the stress, anxiety, and depression, but as soon as you are done with the cigarette, all of it comes back. This is where your psychological addiction is from. If you come to terms that the smoking does not make the anxiety, stress, and depression go away, you will be more mentally prepared to stop smoking. That is step one, and should be your first priority.

Step 2.... as simple as it sounds. Don't put a cigarette in your mouth. Believe it or not, you have the ability to make that decision. You are the one putting the cigarette in your mouth, and you have the choice not to. Don't do it.

Step 3... understand that it gets easier with time.... keep telling yourself, that if you can get through today, tomorrow will be better, then the next day then the next day. The physical addiction will be over in a week... If you can get past that point... and keep telling yourself that you can. It all becomes simply a game of mind over matter.... and YOU are in control of that game.

Step 4... See Step 1. Making excuses is what will defeat you. You'll try to tell yourself, "I'm really stressed out... I just want one and I'll never have another again". Or, "I'm doing really good, I haven't smoked in two months. I'm sure I can treat myself to have a few cigarettes while I'm having a beer. I can stop tomorrow".... WRONG, these excuses are setting you up with failure.... DON'T MAKE EXCUSESS!!!!!!

I was a heavy smoker for 15 years... and I quit. I'd be lying if I said it was easy, but the bottom line is that YOU are in control. The cigarettes will only control you if you LET them control you. Be firm, stay strong, and be in control.

*** EDIT ***
As for the Withdrawl symptoms... See, there you go making excuses again.... no, no, no....Think of the withdrawl symptoms as nothing more than any other symptom you get if you have the cold or the flu. If you get headaces and nausea because of the flu... what would you do? Take some tylenol, eat some food that is easy on the stomach, get some rest... and wait a few days for it to pass. Again, the withdrawl symptoms are not an excuse to have another cigarette... put that out of your mind.

Withdrawal symptoms?

1) OTC pain relievers and ginger ale.
2) I am also going to suggest metamucil or another fiber laxative because after a few days you'll discover that's a problem

3) (most iomportantly) Realize you are going to feel like utter crap for a couple weeks, accept it, and move on...if you were to catch a bad cold you would have discomfort for a week or so without a choice - this wont be much different.

Quit last year after 25 years of heavy smoking.

Start out by writing out the positives and negatives that you get from smoking on paper. The main thing from making you quit is just thinking about it. By thinking about cigarettes, you crave them more. You should try out the e-cigarette. It is very helpfully, in terms of cutting down, and even quiting. I personally just quit on my own. What I did was buy the most horrible cigarette I could think of, which was a Camel unfiltered. I tried to smoke those, but in doing so, it made me hate the taste of smoke and everything else. I really hope this helps. I feel so much better now, and I have a lot more money to spend on different things. Good luck.

There is a book you can get at the library titled "Energy Medicine." This book describes in detail something called the TEMPORAL TAP. All you have to do is tap along each side of your head using your THREE MIDDLE FINGERS. When you tap affirmations into your temporal lobes (areas of your brain) it will have a much stronger effect on your mind and body. I used the temporal tap to get my THYMUS GLAND amped up and strengthened my immune system to such a degree, that whenever I catch the flu, I only have it for about four or five days instead of two weeks.

You can at least reduce your smoking habit significantly, even if you find that you just can't quit entirely. Other people have used this technique to stop smoking and it worked perfectly.

Boomn4x4 was the most correct in his answer. All addiction is psychological and in order to resolve it, you have to correct the unhealthy thought patterns and behaviours that are fueling the addiction. It will take a while but it's the only way you can achieve lasting results. Otherwise, attempting to get tired of the smell by forcing yourself to smoke more or by changing to another brand you dislike, not only is hazardous to your health, but isn't proven to provide the same effective long-term results.
