Is Adderall a really big mistake?!

Question: Is Adderall a really big mistake?
Let me start off with a little about myself, im 14 male, im about 6 feet and 200 pounds. Okay, so i tried taking adderall and it felt so good. Im not prescribed to it. It made me so happy. Then later i was extra moody and started crying, i didn't think it was the pill, is it?. I took one and a half of a 20mg pill that following friday at the mall, And it totally boosted my confidence and made me so happy and mellow. I also was starting to think about using it to lose weight. I wasn't hungry at all but i was able to eat anything to support me for the day without starving myself and i loved it. Then two days later( which is today), i was depressed concerning family issues and just random things, im not even sure if its the after effects of adderall. And i sat crying to my mom about how upset i am.The last time i cried before that was a year ago when my father got a heart attack, this could be puberty but i dont know.. Later i went to the bathroom and took two 20 mg pills, to cheer me up. And i think im moody or sad, or is it because i was sad before, now im starting to feel a somewhat a headache a slight nausea? Im almost positive i have ADD, i have all the symptoms. Im making my mom test me for it to. After doing a lot of research about it. I know im making a big mistake. And i just need to talk about it, thats why im here. Im thinking about taking 20 mg every few days? Or should i just stop? What are the effects of me taking 20 mg ? Is 40 mg just way to much? Im sorry, i know im stupid. Just some help please? I did a lot of research on this. And i still have unanswered questions :( Im aware of most of the symptoms. I want to try to take it without abusing it. Tell me your thoughts please im aware of my ignorance so be nice. Im ready to throw out my pills. Thank you <3

Simply put everything you describe is almost certainly from the Adderall. Adderall will certainly increase your confidence and reduce your depression (it is sometimes prescribed for treatment-resistant depression). But if you crash, not everyone does, it can cause depression clinically indistinguishable from severe major depressive disorder.

Also as much as you may think you have ADHD you can't diagnose your self and not all doctors require testing, there is no single standard universally accepted test for ADHD. I never do testing on patients with ADHD.

It sounds like the amount of Adderall you are taking it too much for you. If you do have ADHD you will probably have beneficial effects at a lower dose, you have said you are taking up to 40 mg because of depression, not the ADHD.

I really think you need to completely stop and be prepared for a few bad days. It sounds like you are taking instant-release Adderall (tablets). So if you have been taking it once or twice a day there is no point in tapering the dose. Adderall only lasts 4-6hrs. The amount you took was not that much, technically 40 mg/day if the FDA approved maximum dose for ADHD but up to 60 mg/day may be used for narcolepsy and in some rare cases 90 mg, even 120 mg is prescribed for sleeping disorders. However 40 mg may be too much for you personally.

When you do see a doctor about ADHD talk about this, a lot of people take stimulants to self medicate for ADHD or depression, it does not mean you are an addict or that the doctor won't prescribe you medication. If you do need medication you might consider an extended-release medication since it is less likely to cause a crash and it lasts most of the day.

One person mentioned Vyvanse as a less addictive option, that is not true. Vyvanse is harder to abuse when it is snorted, smoked, or injected. However when taken orally Vyvanse has the same abuse potential of other amphetamines. Vyvanse is a prodrug so it has no pharmacological effects on its own but it is broken down into dextroamphetamine, an amphetamine that produces its effects. Vyvanse may be a good option for some people but it is absurdly expensive and the dextroamphetamine it turns into is in Adderall (mixed with levoamphetamine) and Dexedrine is pure dextroamphetamine. Both drugs are much cheaper than Vyvanse.

Really you should let the doctor pick the medication if you need one.

it looks like you have most of your answers. you are right about the last part. if you do not have add it wires you up.

Yes taking more then the recomended dose will be a mistake

Exactly how much research did you do? Did you happen to run across the part where it is an amphetamine? What you are describing is called a crash, It's what happens when little kiddies take drugs they know they aren't supposed to sporadically and their bodies go UP then DOWN then UP then DOWN.

Take a look here for some basic info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adderall

EDIT: Before you consider the opinion of the guy who posted before me please read over what he wrote and pay attention to HOW he wrote it. Crap like that is why I come to this site, it's always good for a laugh.

yes it will make u cry and stuff, i took it wen i was about 11 (20 mg) (wasnt prescribed either) i also didnt laugh or have a sence of humor but i did great on my school work and payed attention real good. and then when i was 17 i was prescribed the medicine (20 mg) and the doc prescribed me an anti- depessant....the side effects it gave me was depression (crying for no particular reason), dry mouth, no appetite, no sence of humor (no laughing) but the good thing was that i made staight A's in school while i was on it, and being naturally a hyper person i wasnt hyper at all on it, i was very serious. but i stopped takin it as soon as i graduated HS in 2006 and never took it since, i like how i am naturally, if you are a natural happy go lucky person and very funny and people like u then if u take the medicine it will make u like a bump on a log and not fun 2 be around and some people may think ur wierd so i just dont take prescribed drugs no more cause it makes me somebody im not (if i was in college i'd probly still take it tho, that way i can make straight A's again

Adderall is great, not gonna lie. It will def. boost your self esteem, make you not hungry, and ultra happy. At least it always does for me. I took a 30mg of it for my first time last Friday, and I fell in love..then I took Ritalin that following week, 1 of the 20mg pill on saturday..loved it then took it again on sunday. Then I didn't have it for a couple of days..coming off of Ritalin sucked made me really itchy, mad, and over emotional. I felt like a Zombie. Then on Tuesday my friend gave me some Vyvanse a 60mg pill and I loved that. Then after the comedown I was soooo soooo depressed. I didn't even feel like moving. Thursday I got another Adderall 30mg and I got so much done and I was back to normal and happy. After coming down from it I was pretty depressed..I also didn't eat lunch or dinner. The next day following Friday (it was a week of pills) I realized how much money I was wasting. I felt like I NEEDED these ADHD pills BECAUSE I HAVE ADHD I mean I must..right? because it helped so much. I realized why my friends who do have ADHD hate these pills. They don't want to feel like they have to rely on these things..they want to share what potential they have without inducing pills. Sure. these pills make you less hungry, and really happy. But I realized that to be happy I don't need to be on pills. I mean every once in a while I will do Adderall again, because it's fun..plus it motivates me in a great way...but I WILL NOT..I REPEAT WILL NOT RELY ON IT. but if I feel like it's affecting my life that badly to the point where I think I'm addicted I will def. not do anymore. I've taken a break from those pills and I'm sure I will for a while. The downside of all these ADHD pills is the comedown, they really really suck. Honestly. I think you should be prescribed to Vyvanse 60mg a day would be fine for you. They're better then Adderall..last longer and the comedown isn't as crappy. Plus they're not as addicting. LOOK UP SOME FACTS ABOUT IT. I just don't want to see you addicted and it seems like you started being addicted already..addiction just isn't worth it.

p.s btw these pills can get pricey
adderall xr 30mg= 3$ each
ritalin 20mg= 1-2$ each
Vyvanse 60mg= 3$ each

Now imagine if you were'nt prescribed and you were addicted ...it adds up right?

And to answer your Q's-
I AM 5FT AND 98 PDS and 30 mg of adderall is good for me..so I'm sure you're alright. If anything you should take 60mg. Unless it is XR adderall then stick to 30mg. XR Adderall has little beads on half the side and is usually orange.
