Do sleep studies do any good?!

Question: Do sleep studies do any good?
I just had a sleep study done and it was so uncomfortable and they put things in and around my nose I could barely breathe. If they tell me I was tossing and turning and had low oxygen levels I’m going to give them one big “DUH”! Are they for real? Seems a little self serving to me to sell a lot of those breathing machines.

Hi there.

Below are some articles written about the benefits of Sleep Studies.

"The Benefits of a Sleep Study
Some sleep disorders are very dangerous if not detected and it is more difficult to receive a proper diagnosis just by discussing the symptoms you are experiencing. Sometimes a sleep study can provide a fast diagnosis and get the proper treatment started. For more information on sleep problems and what you can do, take a look at FusionSleep.com.

The Benefits of a Sleep Study Lab
Fusion Sleep Study DoctorsSleep is a requirement for you to be healthy and your body to operate efficiently. Without the proper amount of sleep, your body cannot repair cells, rejuvenate, and be ready for daily activities. Improper amounts of sleep can impair brain functions such as memory, learning ability, and your mood. Your body cannot fight off infections as it should and your health in general is affected. When you are having sleep problems, it can be hard to determine why you are not getting enough rest. Some sleep disorders have symptoms that are not easily noticed and sufferers live each day not knowing there is a problem. They may be overly tired and irritable. Job performance and home life may be interrupted. The first thing you must do is pay attention to what is happening with your sleep. Make changes in your diet and daily routine to see if you can obtain the sleep you need.

If changes like these are not making a difference, consider talking to your doctor about sleep disorders and what you have noticed. Unless the disorder is obvious, tests will be necessary to determine what the cause for your lack of sleep is. Most regular doctors like to test for medical conditions before they say a disorder is a possibility. This will ensure that a medical issue has not brought on your sleep problems. In cases where a medical condition exists, treatment of that condition can often remove the other symptoms. When there is not obvious cause for your sleep issues, a specialist can use a sleep study lab to monitor your sleep patterns and get a solid diagnosis.

The symptoms can actually be seen rather than just discussed. These labs are controlled environments that have all the comfort and items you need to sleep as you would at home. A one night study may be enough to get a proper diagnosis. However, more severe disorders can require many tests and multiple studies. By seeing what you are experiencing first hand, they can use the data to establish the exact disorder and suggest the most reasonable and promising treatments for your condition. The purpose of these labs is to physically measure how well you sleep and what is going on while you are sleeping. Having a lab done will let a doctor see what otherwise may have never been known.

If your doctor recommends having a sleep study lab performed, it is a very good idea and can save you many trips to the doctor. In a very short time you can know the problem and be on your way to treating and alleviating it. Without a lab, you may have to go through many treatments that may not even be effective. The diagnosis could be wrong and you could end up receiving a treatment for a disorder you do not even have. Not to mention you will still be suffering from the symptoms and lack of sleep the whole time all of this trial and error is going on. Save your time and money so you can protect your health and get back to normal."
