Taking Vitamin C every day?!

Question: Taking Vitamin C every day?
When I was growing up, my mom had me take a Vitamin C supplement every day. I stopped when I was about 18. I'm 29 now and haven't been sick (besides the common cold) in literally 10 years (no joke!). I'm wondering if my daily dose of Vitamin C as a kid is the cause for my great immune system now. If it is, I would like to do the same with my own children. Please, only answer if you know what you're talking about.

It may be helpful in the sense that you grew without a lot of interference from disease.

Vitamin C, however, does not build up in your body, so you don't have some kind of accumulated defense from it. Excess vitamin C doesn't stay in your body for very long at all. Taking supplements is a smart move because it ensures that your body will get as much as it needs. The excess, though, is eliminated in urine in a short time, which is why you should continue to take supplements daily.

edit: Yes, you should give your kids vitamin C supplements. In my opinion though you shouldn't bombard them with it because that doesn't accomplish anything. If they are getting the RDA that is enough.

Everyone can benefit from taking a natural source multivitamin supplement every day, and extra vitamin C is an excellent immune system booster.
RDA's are just guesstimates of the minimum someone needs to ingest for basic survival. They're not based on any real science/trials, etc. They're certainly not based on values that would reflect the optimum amount for great health.
There are only 2 species that don't make their own vitamin C: humans and guinea pigs. Humans are the only species that has heart attacks. What does this tell you? Most mammals make over 15,000 mg of vitamin C a day as part of their metabolism. It helps to keep arteries clear of plaque buildup.
Linus Pauling, the discoverer of vitamin C took over 10,000 mg a day. He lived to be well into his 90's.
Optimum vitamin C dose is individual. You take it to "bowel tolerance" then scale back. The notion that you just eliminate it via urination in amounts over a few hundred mg is an old notion that's been spouted by some MD's in the past that has no basis in fact. MD's have no training in nutrition at all.
Go ahead and give your kids the vitamin C. It's a great idea.

People with a weak immune system can benefit from vitamin C tablets every day but if you are healthy and get at least 50 mg or preferably at least 100 mg of vitamin C from a normal healthy diet you don't really need any vitamin C tablets. An orange contains about 50 mg of vitamin C and a tomato probably even more. All fruit and vegetables contain some vitamin C.

Your great immune system is totally unrelated to the vitamin C tablets you took up to the age of 18.

I don't know if Vitamin C really affects the immune system but all fruits are good for the well-being of the body. Vitamin C is available in fruits like Oranges, Lemons etc. and it is better to take fruits than a tablet. It's advisable to take some sort of fruit or fruits daily, maybe a different one daily, to keep the body fresh, lively and energetic. One may take it in the form of home-made juice for taste and as a last resort, packaged juices. Vitamin supplements in the form of tablets is a must for some diseases and not really advisable otherwise for everyday consumption because it's always better to live naturally.

Vitamin C is washed out of your body every three hours, it is a water soluable vitamin, other than it helping you absorb calcium, making your bones stronger, and helping to detox poisons, I don't see how doing that then affects you now, although the detoxing is a great help, because toxins build up over time...I would make sure my children got everything they need, some 40 nutrients, if you get the book Let's Have Healthy Children by Adelle Davis, this has to be bought used over the internet, cuz its out of print, but she was a talent like einstein was in science, and her book is so amazing, easy to understand, informative and inspiring it will help you understand many things, she even shows pictures of slight facial and head deformities, and explains how this can be avoided, and also how not to have morning sickness, it's just a higher need for vitamin B-6. Also she explains the importance of breast feeding, especially in the first three days, if you want your child to be healthy, always breastfeed, man just can't improve on our body's knowing...

No, the Vitamin C supplements as a kid has had no bearing on your immune function today. Barring illness, if your children have a normal diet you don't need to give them any extra vitamins at all. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend vitamin use in healthy children over 1 year old.
