Yes, it is the most common way chronic hepatitis B is acquired. In the US, there is a 40% percent chance that infants born to hepatitis B infected mothers will develop chronic hepatitis B, compared to a 6-7% chance of vertically passing the hepatitis C virus.

When the infant is given the vaccine within twelve hours of birth, the risk of the baby acquiring hepatitis B is reduced 90%.

Hepatitis B is in blood and other bodily fluids such as semen. You cannot get hepatitis B by hugging.

A pregnant woman who tests positive for chronic hepatitis B infection is usually reported to the local or state health department for case management services. Local health department staff will test and vaccinate (if necessary) other household members and will ensure that the infant is vaccinated at birth.

Please take advantage of the services provided by your local or state health department.

Passing from mother to child in utero or during childbirth is called "vertical transmission." And yes, Hepatitis B (and C) are among the viruses that can be transmitted this way.

HBV can NOT be contracted by hugging. This is a hardy blood-borne illness, so it is passed by contact with infected blood (eg: sexual contact, sharing needles, contaminated manicure/pedicure/shave instruments, etc.)

There are medications that reduce the risk of vertical transmission. This viral infection can be resolved! So it's often treated early in pregnancy. But if it's contracted during pregnancy, sometimes a C-section will be discussed as an alternative to vaginal birth to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to the baby during childbirth. And, as has already been mentioned, vaccination at birth is common especially when the mother is infected, because HBV can quickly become life-threatening in infants.

It's important to note that the vast majority (more than 90%) of non-infant individuals who contract hepatitis B have mild flu-like symptoms for a few weeks before their immune systems resolve the infection naturally. It's actually quite rare to develop fulminant disease (jaundice, reversible liver damage, etc.)

Yes but steps can be taken to prevent this.
In UK affected mothers' babies are offered vaccination at birth.
I don't know what preventative methods are used in other countries.

Yes. It can be cured through Homeopathic treatment so that it's not passed on to the child.
