Please answer Chiropractic patience?!

Question: Please answer Chiropractic patience?
has anyone going to a chiropractor ever had them push down hard on the top of your head slightly turning it toward the shoulder that he is also pushing down on.since then I seem to feel worse.
I think you should never do something like that myself.wouldn't that be compacting the spine?

This sounds like a foraminal compression or facet compression test.
It isn't dangerous at all and there is virtually no chance of a stroke from this technique. American trained Osteopaths are doing a modified version of this technique to the C-spine to help mobilise joints. They prefer this rather than HVT's as the risk is almost non existent and less than HVT.
I use that technique a lot in people with neck pain where a manipulation may be a caution or contra-indication.

He should have explained his reasons for doing so and asked your permission before hand though.

Tina, this depends upon the position that you are in when this was being done. In the sitting position the movement is done to close the space where the nerve exits and then a compressive force is applied. Doing this puts pressure on the nerve roots. If there is a pain that radiates down the arm then it is considered a positive test for nerve root problems. If this is done on a regular basis then there is no reason for it. The test if positive would usually be followed up by doing some distraction to take the pressure off the nerve or nerves.

Been to several different chiropractors and NO, they have never done that. In fact, most will do the opposite when they cradle the skull in the hands and pull ever so slightly to create a bit of traction on the cervical vertebrae to help release tension etc.

Maybe there is some technique I don't know about for specific problems that one of the chiropractors on here can explain or deny exists. But it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

EDIT: Well there you go. The few who actually know were able to answer and explain that it is an actual test. I wasn't sure and admitted it. Too bad others can't do the same. Especially those who aren't chiropractors nor have ever been to one.

it is called a cervical compression test, and is used to determine the presence of cervical nerve root compression by momentarily reducing the cervical foraminal space to see if this elicits any radicular (shooting) pain as might occur with reduced foraminal opening. normally there should be no lasting effects of this routine test.

Unfortunately Tina, you received a nerve compression test from a chiropractor who was either absent that day or got a "D" in class. I hope you now realize that just maybe going to a chiropractor isn't such a good ides after all. Why end up with more problems that you started out with?

I'm guessing he didn't warn you of the risk of stroke? Forget the quacks - see a physiotherapist or musculoskeletal specialist, depending on your problem.
