Well, Benadryl is an antihistamine (allergy drug). It just so happens that over the counter sleeping aids, like Unisom or even Tylenol PM, are the EXACT same drug as Benadryl, which is diphenhydramine. So you can always take Benadryl as a substitute for an OTC sleep aid. They are even the same dosage as the sleep aid pills. Try taking 1 or 2 of those to help you sleep tonight.

It's best if you take the Benadryl and then lay down right away, trying to relax and giving the diphenhydramine a chance to work. If you stay up waiting for a sleepy feeling to kick in, it's probably not going to happen. It's not that strong, which is why it's sold over the counter. This doesn't mean, however, that you should take more than 1 or 2, because taking too much diphenhydramine results in respiratory depression. It can kill you, just like any other sleeping drug, by causing your breathing to become very shallow or just completely stop once your asleep. If you were still awake, it would cause major anxiety, a feeling of your heart beating out of your chest, sweating, and just general discomfort. It's not fun. So don't over-do it trying to get to sleep.

So, take a couple Benadryl, lay down in your bed and relax, clearing your mind and allowing yourself to become drowsy and have the diphenhydramine do it's stuff. It just might work for you!

Good luck.

P.S. In the future, you could ask your doctor about a drug called Trazodone. It's a prescription sleep aid, but it's not physically addictive like benzodiazapines are, such as xanax or valium or attivan. It's much safer, and the only addiction really possible is psychological. In other words, you would become so used to taking it for sleep that you would start to feel like you couldn't sleep without it. However, you would not ever develop actual withdrawel symptoms if you were to stop taking it on a nightly basis. Since it's not physically addictive, and because it's actually an anti-depressant that happens to have a side effect of drowsiness, it's a good choice for people that doctors don't want to dump an addictive, dangerous sleeping medication on to. Perhaps your doctor would be more comfortable prescribing something relatively safe like Trazodone. It does work quite well for most people and is usually given in a dose ranging from 50 mg to 300 mg max, with most people taking somewhere around 100mg and progressing to 200 or 300mg if they find that a lower dose doesn't work for them.

Ask your doctor about it!

I'm a Paramedic, and therefore have some basic pharmacology education. I also happen to use Benadryl myself as a cheaper alternative to over the counter sleep aids like Unisom. Same ingredient, same dosage, same result.

melatonine..or something with dipheminahydramine in it you can take like 100mg i belive id o anyways and i sleep good..try a night time tea

Melatonin, diphenhydramine (benedryl), tylenol pm, chamomile tea, turkey (tryptophan), nyquil...

Household meaning OTC...over the counter. Try Benedryl. 50mgs should get you quite sleepy.
