Answers:

Cold sores are caused by a virus, the only thing that can get rid of a virus is an antiviral cream/ointment like Zovirax, anything else is quite useless and may make your sore spread even further.

Toothpaste is a good treatment for external applications (which will take a while to see the results), but you could also take L-Lysine (an Amino Acid) to help fight it internally, too. L-Lysine can help to get rid of it sooner, plus you can take it safely after you can't see the sore anymore to make sure it's gone.
Also, if you get cold sores on a regular basis, taking L-Lysine can actually help prevent them from coming up again. Oh, and stress tends to aggravate cold sores, so reducing stress may help as well. Good luck!

I get them occasionally, use to use Blistex which helps a little; Abreva I haven't tried because it is too expensive. There is a prescription drug no one mention that works as I tried it when I was getting permanent lipstick done. Now I use pepto-bismal, the pink stuff and it works. Not only does it taste good, its inexpensive and lasts a long time. I put it on when my lips feel dry, just for the heck of it, but when I feel a cold sore coming on, I put it on 3-4 times a day and the sores never materialize. Try it.

I have same problem.

Use The Canker Spanker, it's fast, pharmacist recommended and I swear by it. You can use it for breakouts and to prevent future cold sores (which is how I use it). Anyway, Google them. Good luck I know how painful they can be.

Order it and avoid having cold sores all together.

Ron is right, it is caused by a virus, herpes simplex 1.

You can cause it to spread by putting junk on it. Toothpaste??? Earwax??? Really!

FYI, earwax is water soluble, so you don't need oil to soften it.

I have had cold sores for years.

I've heard that plain lysol sprayed onto a cotton ball and applied to the cold sore would boost the healing time. I don't get cold sores, so I don't know how true that is, but it came from someone I would believe.

The very best remedy is free: Ear wax. You can get it out of your ear with a Q-tip. If the wax is too hard, put some warm oil into it so soften it.
