Light therapy is used for a few different reasons, but most commonly for the "winter blahs" (or more severely, Seasonal Affective Disorder). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_thera… has a good article about it, but the best way I've heard it put is that "it tricks the brain into thinking that it's not winter". ;-)
There are some that use Vitamin D supplements to get the missing nutrition and that tends to help, but some just need the mental aspect of having more sunlight, not just the Vitamin D. It can also be used for skin issues as well, so that's an entirely different aspect and different reason... the Wiki article addresses most all the reasons for using it. Why? because some folks when deprived of so many hours of sun become downright looney tunes with depression (not to mention anxiety).

Had a buddy who used to patrol Fort Wainwright (Alaska) during the winter for no other reason than it was reasonably common for people to rip off all of their clothes and go running screaming out the door - and they had to be rescued in a matter of minutes. That was his official duty. Where I am, people don't get quite that nuts - but it really is something that can be a doozy for peoples emotional state.

and winter lethargy.



For the winter blues when one is deprived of sunshine. Just avoid them if you have certain eye problems like dry eyes.
