Question: What do I need to know about the basics of meditating?
I've been suffering from stress/anxiety for several months now, and my doctor recommended meditation as a form of relief. What do I need to know, and/or are there sites, books, etc that I should look into? Thanks in advance!

Here are a couple of simple breathing meditation techniques:

Technique 1:

Breathing in, I know I'm breathing in.
Breathing out, I know I am breathing out.

Silently repeat this simple phrase with each in and out breath until you have focused in on the rise and fall of your abdomen associated with each breath. Then simply observe the breath for the prescribed period of time. Thoughts will arise - don't engage them or repress them. Simply watch them float by like clouds in your bright, clear mind sky.

Technique 2:

In, one - Out, one...
In, two - Out, two...
up to ten.
Then, In, nine - Out, nine...
down to one
Then back up to ten.

All the while keep your mental focus on the rise and fall of your abdomen at the point just below your navel.

Repeat for prescribed period of time (I recommend 20 minutes starting out - try using a timer, however you might want to keep it out of reach).

The basic premise of meditation is deep breathing and relaxation of the mind. There are many techniques, guided meditations, relaxation tapes/cd's/etc. You can go to your library and ask for the books that show how or tapes that guide you through imaging of relaxation. It is a simple process, really, but takes some time to get centered if you are very stressed. But again, you can feel the effects quite quickly even then.
