The universe is composed of energy and that the apparent differentiation between solids, liquids, gases, sound, and light is merely a difference in their vibratory rates. By chanting the aum, the divine vibration, or a mantra, we can increase the body's supply of cosmic energy and even direct it as a healing force to any part of the body, mind, and soul.

It helps with our vibrations, which if relaxation is the goal, will help with that. It helps keep the mind from distraction and keeps focus as well :)

On itself it doesn't do anything at all.

If the mantra is in your mother tongue and is meaningful,
it could change your convictions.

For instance we have all been brought up with the medicine mantra:

'Mainstream medicine is peer reviewed and double checked and therefore truth.
The scientist are our gods.'

If we however say another mantra or just look at reality we see :
'Mainstream medicine is just statistics
and their scientists are fake and overpaid.'

If you have a feeling for justice,
your muscles won't relax.
if you are enlightened, and know that justice is just an illusion,
created by overpaid lawyers and their peers,
you will smile and your muscles will relax.

In quantum terms this phenomenon is called 'the collapse of the wave function'.

Both it removes your thoughts from your surroundings and normal life
