3 herniated disks in my spine and im only 16. please help me?!

Question: 3 herniated disks in my spine and im only 16. please help me?
ive had really bad lower back pain and excruciating pain in my right leg down to my ankle for about 2 years now. We've been to a family doctor, chiropractor, and now we just recently went to a spine doctor. We got x-rays back and they told us that i have 3 herniated disks (they told me i had the back of a 60 year old ha ha) in my lower back mainly on the left hand side (but all my problems are with my right leg). I am a competitive figure skater and ballroom dancer. I skate 3 times a week for 4 and a half hours. I dance for about four and a half hours. I have been to 3 different physical therapists. 1 is supposed to be a highly recommended sports physical therapy place (recommended by the spine doctor) , but we ive decided stop going because after two months you think that it would help, but it doesn't. Nothing helps the pain. Oh, and ive had three cortisone shots to. Now, they want to do surgery to remove the disks that are messed up. What are the risks of this and how long will i be out of school and my other activities? Is there any other alternitive? I really dont want to get surgery.

(it hurts on my lower back down to bottom and outside of my knee and stops at the inside and top of my ankle)

You need to get a 2nd and even a 3rd opinion from a Orthopedic Surgeon and perhaps a Physiatrist (note the spelling).

It was a mistake to see a chiropractor. HIO chiropractors maintain that all diseases (OK — 95%) are due to misalignment of the topmost ("Atlas") vertebra. HIO treatments revolve around "realigning" this one vertebra at the other end of the spine from your problem area. There is no evidence any of this is true.

The only Osteopathic worth seeing would be USA-educated "Osteopathic Physicians" who are board-certified in Orthopedics. Osteopaths outside the USA are poorly trained sub-professionals — masseurs who know little about real medicine. (They "talk the talk" but can't "walk the walk"). Do not let ANY Osteopaths practicing so-called "Cranial Osteopathy" attempt to massage your head or poke your buns.

They want to do surgery and remove 3 discs!!!!

You've missunderstood them. No surgeon would do this in the developed world especially to a 16 year old.
The only procedure where this would be considered is something like Dynesys. http://www.zimmer.com/z/ctl/op/global/ac…

The herniations being on the contra-lateral side to the lesions doesn't support this either.
If this scenario is real (which I suspect it is not) I suspect you have a connective tissue disorder and you need to investigate this before going any further.

Ignore the Answer from Troll. He's an Engineer that works as a night watchman because he doesn't have adequate social skills to get a real job.
He knows almost nothing about conventional medicine and even less about Alternative medicine or Osteopathy.
He has become such an embarrassment even most of the skeptics on this site avoid him because quite clearly he is exercising a personal grudge against Osteopaths which I strongly suspect stems form a guy he had a romantic interest in choosing an Osteopath as a romantic companion over him.

I agree these guys make excellent doctors but are usually crap Osteopaths.

Hmm..... 4 years full time education at university (or equivalent) is the training required for a Masseur is it?....
Board certification with primary care practitioner status underwriten by the government is sub professional?....
Incidently CLINICAL MEDICINE forms an extensive part of every ciriculum in the UK and Antipodean Sylabus in every institution which is why we are government certified to MEDICALLY ASSESS and screen patient and why we are autonomous diagnosticians. He has been told this repeatedly but like to deceive and lie.

Here he is showing his ignorance. We do neither of these things in a cranial treatment. Nor do we treat Malaria anymore although he claimed that we still do. No mainstream osteopath has done that since the 50's....

He knows this but refuses to acknowledge it.....

he is notoriously slow to learn and displays a distinct lacking in emotional intelligence....

And so this saga of him humiliating himself continues.....

the stupidity boggles the mind. what the heck are you doing all that strenuous activity constantly for with your back in that condition? do you want to be paralyzed? you better use your brain right now and decide which is more important, dancing a little more, or being able to walk in the future. number one. knock off all the unnecessary physical activity. number two. go see an hio method upper cervical specific chiropractor and do what he says.( by the way, did the genius who gave you the shots tell you they can cause diabetes?)

Are you STILL competing in this condition? I would hope not. It may be time to consider surgery as other less invasive treatments have been ineffective. All surgery has risks: infection, delayed healing, injury to other tissues, side effects of anesthesia, etc. (Since you are young and presumably healthy... You have better odds of a good outcome.) Instead of focusing on missing time from school, the bigger priority is to get you out of pain and healthy for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. It may be time to hang up your skates, sorry. There will be other things you will want to do too, I promise. (Like having kids one day.) Please get yourself a consult with a surgeon. They will go over risks with you and what you can expect. It may not be as scary as you think. From what you described, it sounds like your nerves are being pinched and you will have excruciating pain (and poor control of your legs) until this is fixed. Good luck to you.
