Do you know whether the toothache is a result of a tooth problem or stress? Perhaps even grinding your teeth? It does make a difference as to how you treat it.

Firstly, if there is something wrong with your tooth, try the natural remedies like clove oil (if you have any). But generally, normal painkillers will give you some relief. A dental analgesic works better if you have some. If your toothache is a result of an abscess, then the relief will be temporary and you need to treat the infection.

If the toothache is a result of stress, perhaps grinding your teeth, then relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, yoga, meditation will help best. You can test for this by concentrating on your jaw and around the base of your ears to see if it feels tight or sore. Open your mouth wide and if that hurts more, particularly at the hinge for your jaw, then that may indicate stress-related toothache.

You can use a visualisation technique to deal with the pain: Close your eyes and take your mind to focus on the pain itself. Give it a shape and a colour. When that is clear, change the shape and the colour, and make it smaller.

This will give you temporary relief only, and will work better if it is stress-related rather than an issue with your tooth.

Even if you can get rid of the pain, it is best to see a dentist to find the source.

My father is a dentis and I worked for him for 10 years

mix a table spoon of cooking oil, and a teaspoon of mustard.

Wash this around in your mouth, particularly around the tooth that hurts.

It might not taste the greatest, but it works.

I've been told that dabbing pure vanilla extract on the tooth gives it immediate relief. I've never had occasion to try it myself but it is a common household item and inexpensive. Could be worth a shot.
