Is ear candling anything to be scared of?!

Question: Is ear candling anything to be scared of?
Okay, so my mom bought "ear candles" for my sisters and I, but I have NO idea what the hell they do to your ears. What do they do? Do they hurt? Will is make me go deaf? Should I be scared to have it done? Cause I sure as hell am scared to get it done!! PLEASE HELP ME!!! =/

Ear candling is a TOTAL SCAM!

It has no purpose, does not work and yes, there's always the danger of being burnt or getting something stuck in your ear.

Even the government advises that it's fake and dangerous: http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/Safet…

AVOID!

Yes, ear candling IS something that could harm your ears. One should never put anything warmer than what tepid water feels like into ones ear. That simply means that the it is only slightly warm. I think of the temperature for anything appropriate for the ear as being similar to what one might think is an appropriate temperature for warmed milk for a tiny infant. The way one tests for the temperature of an infant's milk is often by putting drops of it on the inside of ones wrist. If one can only barely feel the warmth, it's safe for the infant. The same is true for any liquid one would put into even an adult ear. People sometimes put slightly warmed oil into the ear canal, but it is specifically made for the ear. Anything too warm that goes into the ear can injure the eardrum, and if it flows beyond the eardrum could even injure the little bones in the ear or what are called "hairs" in the ear, all of which are what allow us to hear. Unless you talk to a pharmacist or your medical doctor about exactly the procedure for using anything inside the ear, there's a chance for serious, even permanent damage. There are some people who still advise never to put anything larger than your elbow into your ear ! Of course there are ... as I said ... oils, even earwax cleansing methods that can be safe IF one follows the specific, medically approved directions. Better safe than sorry ! Sure are some great sounds out there ! And, yes, there are some ... uh ... voices I'm sure each of us would sometimes prefer not to hear as well ... but just try some really heavy-duty earmuffs under those circumstances, how 'bout it ?!

I have a degree in Speech and Hearing Pathology.

naw, it dosent hurt
its used to get excess earwax out of your ears
it creates a kind of vacum when you light them
they wont make you go deaf
it wont hurt, assuming the person whos lighting them dosent set your hair on fire
its nothing
side note; some people dont think its effecting or even works
best method to get rid of ear wax is to flush it out with air or water
and some ear wax is actually good for you
excess could impair your hearing
DONT USE QTIPS (although i do because im cheap and lazy) they push stuff further in

if your uncomfortable doing it .......... dont

If you do ear candling exactly as they tell you too, the chances are good that you will not hurt yourself. But there are variables at hand...hot wax, fire, teamwork, very delicate little ear canals...

You would be better off not to use them however. Their whole point is to create a "gentle suction" that removes earwax from the ear canal by using heat, and (sorry to give away the secret) they do not work. They are, in fact, a total crock and waste of money. Cut one open and see. There's a bunch of wax already in there.....
